Yeah, the history behind this is interesting. Black folks who left the south early on were not happy about the Great Migration/mass exodus of southern sharecroppers coming to their cities, be it LA, San Fran, NY, CHI, etc. They saw them as culturally different and a bad representation. And to be fair, they were less educated and less acculturated. So this was more of a class thing than self-hate/wanting to be white. And low-key, they weren't wrong. The mass influx made white folks panic and create ghettos to control the black population, and middle class black folks got lumped in.

This is a fact. Beyonce is the mother’s family surname. She don’t even check in on her people when its Sugar Cane festival time nor come to a home game at the CajunDome. Long story short, they didn’t consider themselves black and weren’t legally classified as such until much later.
