Last month there was a report that he was checked into a mental facility, but there were no details as to why...now we know why.
At some point aside from this concussion thing there's gonna be an epidemic of football players who have had their brain-chemistry permanently altered from being hit in the head too much. Aside from the regular concussion symptoms of forgetfulness, headaches or depression, I think it's gonna result in behavioral issues.
I'm not saying Ray Rice didnt knowingly do what he did, or wasn't just being an a$$hole.......but what if he didn't? What if he's taken so many hard hits to the head that his brain-chemistry was altered from the mild-mannered guy everyone knew him as. Obviously it doesnt affect everyone the same, but I think there's something to it. Quite a few football players I've known over the years were a little bit throwed off, especially the ones who played in max contact positions.
DALLAS -Former Cowboys running back Marion Barber was detained by police and sent to the hospital for a mental evaluation after bringing a loaded guninto a North Texas church.
According to police reports, Barber showed up unannounced at the Word of Truth Church in Mansfield on June 15. He began speaking erratically and scared staff members with a gun on his hip.
Barber was actually detained later that evening. A friend called police after seeing him pacing back in forth in front of his home in Mansfield.
The friend told police about the church incident and said Barber said he had been drinking all day. The friend also mentioned calling a Cowboys doctor to the scene.
The officers stopped Barber from leaving and took a 9mm handgun and three magazines away from him. They noted he seemed disoriented and his answers were not clear. At one point he said he didn't know what year it was or where he was at, the police report states.
Barber's pastor told the officers he was concerned for his well-being.
“He called me today and I could not follow his conversation. He has been this way for a while,” Pastor Eben Conner said in a statement to police.
The officers took Barber to John Peter Smith Hospital for “mental detention and observation.”
He was never charged with any crime.
Barber played in the NFL from 2005 to 2011, mostly with the Cowboys. He retired in 2012 after a season with the Chicago Bears.
