On one hand, this shyt has produced great matches and WWE has crowned a new WWE/World Champion a year kind of forcing them to make new stars.

On the other hand the Miz won the WWE title out of it.

Thoughts?

I think it's a great way to gauge the audience's reaction to someone on that come up.

Plus, it's a good plot device that has everyone wondering when that person gonna cash it in, making even the most mundane moments potentially explosive.

It's still a good thing.

I would rather it only be 1 match instead of 2 and the match go back to WM instead of being it's own PPV, though

It being its own PPV is fine. It allows the MITB matches to get more time and focus, and thus play themselves out better than they would on a WrestleMania card.

I agree with making it one match rather than two, but I'm on the fence about it. It forces them to, quote-unquote, "make new stars," but WWE tends to book MITB winners like shyt after they get the case and hold it for a while, thus making them look kind of second-rate when they DO win the belt. Of course, Miz would be the fukking exception to this since 2008.

I'd rather have the KOTR back with a SummerSlam title shot hanging in the balance, but I'd be fine with a better booked MITB. The fact that New Japan did the best iteration of the MITB gimmick is kind of pathetic, to be honest.

I don't think they did honestly. We all knew Okada was going to get the title shot a the Tokyo Dome. The MITB was used to give a purpose to the singles matches against top competition he had after the G-1 and as an excuse to extend his title shot to January instead of October (the most common date for the G-1 winner, IIRC).

I mean, New Japan gave an interesting and meaningful twist to the MITB gimmick but I don't think it did a better job than what WWE did with RVD or Edge. It was certainly different and it worked, but I wouldn't say it was necessary better.

I wish that WWE would try what they did with Edge on somebody else, because I remember there being real excitement behind that cash-in (it might have been because it was the first cash in, and because Cena hate was at a high in 2006, but there was buzz nonetheless). But having Okada fight to retain the briefcase and PROVE that he was worthy of the title shot just worked for me. It made it into less of a pure gimmick and more of a symbol of status in the company, that showed how good and how worthy of the title shot Okada was. Compare that to WWE, who tends to book MITB winners like JTTSes.

For me, RVD doesn't count. It was a means to an end like Okada's shot, but they didn't really do anything with it. Everything important stemming from that MITB win came in the actual RVD/Cena match, not from him holding the case.

I would rather see the King of the Ring return to be honest with you. I thought that was the best way to build a guy into the next champion. MitB though is better for the style the run with today, they want a fast paced, quick build type of atmosphere and the briefcase is perfect for it

I think they should have both. Hype MITB as the "heel" way to potentially get to the top, where you can cash in any time ... whereas the KOTR is the "face" way to come up as you gotta beat multiple opponents thru brackets. Of course a face or heel could win one or the other but then you could have storylines where KOTR winner would shyt on MITB winner for being a coward, and/or vice versa. Scenarios where a KOTR would win a title shot and win the title only to have the MITB winner cash in and steal it away could create a new main event/upper card baby face and heel at the same time.

...you magnificent b*stard. I want to do the black and white clap gif right now.

Edit: ...wait, are you guys talking about king of the ring? I thought that was just a tournament for a gimmick change?

The novelty has worn off a little bit, but the fact remains the crowd always pops when a cash-in is teased, and it gets your attention as a TV viewer.

Edge's cash-ins in particular were truly great and intense moments in WWE history. Pretty damn electric atmosphere each time. If they can come even close to replicating those, it's a gimmick worth keeping.
