Same thing happened when the Mongols tried to invade Japan. There was a huge roadblock(the ocean) just like in Africa(a big ass desert) from launching a successful invasion.

I read a book about it once and it was saying how people that drove through it sometimes would lose sight of the road, go off in the wrong direction and never be heard from again. They’d just find the cars abandoned later. We can barely travel through it today let alone 2,000 years ago.
