Illinois always been a read state outside of chicago and surrounding areas.
However 9 million plus of the 12 million Illinois population lives in the chicago land area which is Democrat.
So the state is red in overall area. But the state is blue in overall population.
Don't forget Indiana almost always been red and is the birth place of the KKK.
