It's pretty obvious that the studio sent Oldboy out to die.

I really don't understand why the studio wanted it made in the first place and if they wanted complete control over the project they should have hired some generic director-for-hire.. not an actual filmmaker.

Spike gets pissed because he can't make the film he wants without studio interference then the studio is pissed because Spike didn't make the movie they wanted. Still don't get why they completely shyt-canned the project though.
