So what really goes down inside of those VFW & American Legion Posts?

Is it just a glorified bar for all the old war vets to get out from under their wives, get drunk and smoke?

Or does more go on in there?

Anybody ever been in one?

I was reading that the younger vets ain’t fukkin with ‘em...

I drive by some on occasion... just always looked curious to me.

Word. BYOB? So do you have to show proof of your service? Is everybody cool in there?
You can just fall through whenever?

No one checks your bag when you come in so cats are always bringing their own drank. We're all legal so no one really cares about that. Proof of service is provided via your DD-214 (Separation from Service). No smoking of anything other than tobacco, but you can walk in the back if you wanna blaze. Peeps are generally cool since we're all more mature and been through some shyt. No sense getting all hyped over stuff that happened 20+ years ago. Cats with problems come through and we calm their asses down. That's the real reason we exist. Hours of operation are up to the post, but generally speaking, as long as you're a member and the post is open, you can come through and just chill all damned day to 'get away' from the rest of the world.

Ok... Almost like a “safe haven” of sorts. Like ... informal therapy.

I’ve been reading some stuff about younger vets saying it’s more of an older vet thing and becoming antiquated... do you see membership increasing; remaining steady or falling off?

Nah. The demographic for VFW's when I came on was about age 50+, but that was due to the last major conflict for them being in the 60's. Last major conflict for us was in the 90's so we're actually seeing an influx of 'new blood' coming through. Only vets can understand other vets, especially combat vets, and as this younger group comes through and has to deal with civilian life, they rely on us older vets to show them how to navigate through this morass. The government has gotten a LOT better with smoothing the transition for them, but there's still a lot of help they can receive that isn't quite as well-known. That's another place we come in. We're a Nationwide network with our ears all over the spectrum of services available only via word-of-mouth and persistence. Like the VA, but without the funding.

I went to one that some friends had rented for a concert they were playing. I can see the appeal for sure--no frills cash only bar, cheap drinks. It's a clubhouse with a huge bar basically. I got zooted off $4 dogfish

Vets and consistent drinking tho :patrice:

I’m glad some posts do try to be active in the community ... I do think some younger millennial vets are looking for more from a day-to-day membership than a fraternal, drinking club.

That’s what the stereotype has been unfortunately .

I hear their lobby is strong tho.

Good question
