The cleaner is HBK and Brett combined. The skills and selling abilities of the GOAT HBK and the technique of Hart. His swag is off the chart levels.

Took the words outta my mouth...

What makes him the Japanese Cena?...

Don't know much about him...
Is the hype warranted?...
He's considered the Japenese Cena cause JR coined it at WK9 and everybody pretty much went with it. He's the top guy in the company and has been for about 10 years. He does all the role model stuff. That pretty much where it stops. Way better than Cena in the ring...is actually over as a babyface and can work a heel role if his opponent gets a better crowd reaction than him.

I would say the Japanese Bret Hart would be a better comparison.

is the hype warranted?

5 star matches

Just look for his name at the top of petty much every year starting at 2012

He's considered the Japanese Cena because he pretty much the guy that helped NJPW reach better lengths from the declining Inoki years. He's considered the top guy of the company and never left while others did. His moveset is similar to Cena as he uses his own sequences which rubs some westerners the wrong way. However, you can guarantee dude will put on a good match even if it's considered a dud. It took me a while to appreciate what he's done since I'm more of a Shibata mark, but I understand while Tanahashi-san is appreciated overseas just like the GOAT John Cena to the west.

Are we only going with in-ring abilities?

If so, I think Prince Puma in LU is a dark horse - dude can really do anything and can take a crazy ass whooping.

Also Kota Ibushi is right there too in the same vein.

Pentagon, Naito, Roode, Nak and Rollins are also people I think can be considered.

But with the total package, the Cleaner, AJ, Tanahashi, Okada or Cena

I remember watching a Io Shirai match and my mind was blown to bits. Its funny how during the introduction she's all "I'm going to do my very best and good luck", then she hits the ring and it gets bowling ball shoe ugly. Flips, kicks, stiff ass suplexes, the works :whoo:.
