Also can you explain how the basic housing allowance works? If you stay on base do you get to just pocket the money? Or if you get a place that cost less than your bah do you get to pocket the difference or something?

I don't know how base housing works since I was never married and that's only for the married people. I think bah was a set rate depending on your rank and area. I believe they include a cost of living allowance to offset high rent costs in certain areas...Hawaii and Japan had huge cola rates. My cola rate in Belgium was like 700 bucks on top of the bah they gave me...Felt like a king with all the extra money I had stationed over there. Most single people in the states room up with somebody else so they can pocket the leftover bah money though.
