Besides that, we don't know how wide spread this is because none of us are in highschool and it's only one article pointing it out. As far as I'm concerned, there's still thousands of prom pictures being posted every year, which mean the younger generation men are still approaching.

It’s not just one article pointing this out. This has been written about by both men and women for at least the past 10 years. The question is where have you been.
Now let’s think about how this affects women and why some of them are speaking out now too.
In school there are a couple scenarios of the male and female dynamic.
1. The girl likes the boy, shows she likes the boy, the boy eventually gets the signal and asks her out. This is optimal from the male and female perspective.
2. The girl likes the boy or is indifferent but shows no outward signs she likes the boy. The boy shoots his shot eventually because he likes the girl and they go out. Not optimal but things worked out.
3. The girl goes does not like the boy, boy asks her out and she respectfully declines. End of story. Not a good ending but not bad either.
4. The girl does not like the boy, she declines in a manner which is embarrassing, other people are witness and cause further embarrassment. This embarrassment is captured on video and shared to the entire school which pushes the boy to the bottom of the social ladder for a significant amount of time.
Number 4 is so catastrophic it fundamentally changes the way a portion of the boys interact with the girls. This negatively affects the girls due to scenario 2 dropping substantially. Boys are now significantly less likely to approach girls who do not outwardly show interest. So girls who are too shy to show outward interest in boys or refuse due to social conditioning are left alone, which they do not like at all. In school the girls can recover from this somewhat due to repeated interaction with said boys because school is a tight and closed environment.
The issue is if the boys don’t change their learned behavior when they leave school then those women who dont show clear interest for numerous reasons are at a disadvantage. The real world is not a closed environment so the women may only see the man they are interested in once. A lot of women don’t like this at all, they do not under any circumstance want to be the one to make a move. This is what has led to the quick rise of social dating events where men and women can enter a space where they don’t have to fear public embarrassment.
