Some people don't have Internal Monologue?

I remember this being talked about some time ago, and thinking about it again, I just think they mean people acting without thinking or on impulse.

Like, they do enough of that continuously thru a day where they’re not listening to their thoughts.

Not that there are people running around that can’t think inside their own heads at all. That would be borderline instinctive animal like, or someone with a disability.

Not that there aren’t people like that too, it’s just that there are probably levels to it. It’s like consciousness, I feel.

Its just neurodiversity. Some people just think differently. I'm reminded of folks who literally don't have imagination (no internal pictures in their head) but are still ordinary.

Rather than thinking of it as lower intelligence or damaged people, it might be helpful to think of them the way we think of left handed people or folks who physically cannot whistle or folks can't curl their tounges, etc . Just diversity.

I don't know if there's a word for it, but I went to college with someone who is sort of the opposite of this. She has virtually no intuition at all. Instead, she has to overtly think out every conscious decision she makes. It has all sorts of crazy implications.


* Takes her half-an-hour to order food because she has to rationalize why she will or won't get every individual menu item

* She can only drive to places if she has the explicit directions memorized, no matter how many times she's gone that way before. She can't just "remember" where to turn, she has to consciously know the exact place for every turn and gets lost super easy if she misses a turn.

* She doesn't get 98% of jokes

* If you show her an optical illusion in a book, she never sees the illusion. When you give her one of those tricky word play questions that is supposed to trip people up, she never falls for it. Cause she always thinks everything out, her mind doesn't take the shortcuts everyone else's mind takes.


Of course, she's a mechanical engineer.

Aphantasia? Read a bit about it but have never had the fortune to see it in real life.

These would be the folks with no imagination. They supposedly suffer from a lack of spacial awareness because they don't have the ram in their heads to hold on to things temporarily. But they excel at long term storage like a hardrive.


The human experience is so mind-blowing . I couldn't help but read deeper into Aphantastics after I heard about them on bbc segment a few years ago.


I love cases like these which make us question how much we truly need to be functional humans. You have cases like aphantastics or the folks with no internal monologue who have different wiring, while also having dynamic people with entirely different hardware like childhood hemispherectomy patients who are a still able to function and thrive despite their extreme neurodiversity.

I never knew that name for it or that it was connected to lack of visual imagination. But it makes sense. Reading up online and next time I see her I'm gonna ask if she experiences the rest of it too.
