It's been a long week :wow: I recorded this a week or so before the events of this week but the topic is the same, I dedicated this to Oscar Grant. I was in high school in Oakland at the time of Oscar Grant's death and remember the aftermath of his death very vividly including the riots. It was far from the first time an unarmed black man had been killed by law enforcement in Oakland but it was the first that it was all captured on tape... The anger in Oakland - and especially in/around Fruitvale which is where I lived - was something I'll never forget.

A year after that happened, another rapper from East Oakland named Young Gully dropped a dedication tape to Oscar Grant called Grant Station. I played the fukk out of that tape that year... It was largely slept on even though he was buzzing locally off of a tape he dropped in the same time period (Definition of Gas) but to this day I consider it to be one of the best social justice statements in Hip Hop. When I came up with the concept for this song I immediately thought of getting him on the song. I did :wow:He came through... Although his verse reflects the current events more because he wrote it this week it takes me back to when I used to listen to Grant Station.

At the end of the day though the same bullshyt going on in Tulsa and Charlotte done happened here in Oakland many times as it has all throughout Amerikkka. This is from the heart, the atmosphere in this country is making it harder to breathe every day but I was able to get it off my chest. Let me know if y'all feel this.

The lyrics:

Intro

Fruit of the Vale, I'm the Fruit of the Vale...
Fruit of the Vale, I'm the Fruit of the Vale...
Fruit of the Vale, I'm the Fruit of the Vale...

Verse 1 (myself)

On the block you put your youth up for sale (sale, sale, sale...)
On that auction block they lining you up for cells
Legs spread, fingers interlocked
nikkas 5 deep? They gon bend the block
For that 5 piece, youngins on an injunction? that's 5 a piece
Add another 5 for that 9 piece
Seen your mother cry more than 9 weeks
More than one time they done tried me
Tried to match up cases with my I.D.
Searching databases tryna find me
Perjured affidavits tryna find me... till I disappeared in the night
Young runaway from the Butcher Bay, I was Riddikk's peer in the night
I was shifting gears on the pike, hit the runway and took flight
To the North Star in a sports car, now the pork's all on my hype
When the war starts, no report cards, they'll drop a nikka on sight
No stop and question, pop drop and stretch him, cops taught to left him, no rights...

Hook

Fruit of the Vale, I'm the Fruit of the Vale
This song for Oscar, you the root of the Vale
Fruit of the Vale, I'm the Fruit of the Vale
Been a long time since you fell
Seen you online through a cell, you got one shot...

(BOOM) ...And these crackas gave him one year
No magistrates for these basket cases, way past the patience, I'm here
Way past complaining, I'm here, if you'd rather change it I'm near
False affidavits? I swear, way past arraignments I'm here
Way past the slave ship I'm here, if you'd rather change it I'm near

Verse 2 (Young Gully)

Devil working on us overtime
So its only valid if I go for mine
Coppas shoot us down like we holding 9s
When we unarmed, not a code of mines
Would I carry it with me? Stood on the front lines
For Oscar Grant and gave it full attention
Couldn't find the peace, couldn't pull attention
In this racist world they like to push the vision
Alton Sterling took a deadly hit
watch Terence Crutcher have to rest in piss
Both hands up, "please don't shoot"
Naw, fukk please, we both shoot
Ain't no peace, I need a soldier's boots
They riding with armies so I roll with troops
Can't hold my tongue let alone a tooth
Can't ignore this shyt cause it's so profuse
Governmental devastation
Where is the love? All the stress and hatred
Kills my observations in this rotten nation
They say it's good but it's not persuasive
When we dropping daily, can God save me
before the cops enslave me? Down they lay me
Tryna play me, fighting may we,
life been crazy, got me angry
Flipping off rallies while I march
If we can't finish then why start?
If we revving up just to slow down
tell me why I'm giving this my heart?
Black man gotta matter to
another black man first, that's a stand
It's a warzone like Pakistan,
Police got us doing bad again
Another body? Goddamn, AGAIN?
Now how you think they gon give a fukk?
That's the reason why they come and hit us up
call it a mistake and say they mixed us up, it gotta stop...

I interpreted what he said as meaning we need unity now more than ever in light of the circumstances. I didn't interpret the "another body, goddamn again?" being about blacks killing blacks, the last line of his verse made that clearer imo. I see where you got the other interpretation from but I didn't get that out of it personally.
