Stop right there. When are we going to take control of our own destiny here? There are numerous resources that show the REAL Africa. We're adults here. We can do our own research now.
True...but I'm just saying if people rely on MSM for their news about the affairs of Africa...then expect them to be flawed. I'm not negating what you're saying at all.

Most people just don't care to...cause they expect it to all be negative like the MSM presents it as.

There really aren't though. Dude above just said, "'ll admit, it even took me a while to find reliable news sources that presented an accurate and non-biased viewpoint of African affairs and politics straight from the horses' mouth, and I'm African myself."

Um, there is a thread about "Africa the media doesn't tell you about" on this very forum. Is it really that hard to find resources that don't paint Africa as a cesspit? You can Google Lagos, Nigeria and see that there is more to Africa than Ebola and child warriors. It's all in what you choose to expose yourself to.

You can say that because YOU know that, but some people DON'T. And that, is what the person was talking about. I understand your point but it's not like black people are ignorant. You have to know to be ignorant.

Actually the definition of ignorant is NOT knowing. :skip:

adjective

  1. lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated.
"he was told constantly that he was ignorant and stupid"
synonyms: uneducated, unknowledgeable, untaught, unschooled, untutored, untrained, illiterate, unlettered, unlearned, unread, uninformed, unenlightened, benighted; More
    • lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about something in particular.
      "they were ignorant of astronomy"
      synonyms: without knowledge of, unaware of, unconscious of, oblivious to,incognizant of, unfamiliar with, unacquainted with, uninformed about,ill-informed about, unenlightened about, unconversant with,inexperienced in/with, naive about, green about;
There's really no excuse to hold on to tired stereotypes of Africa. The information is out there, good and bad, if you want it. I'm really tired of some of the "but CACs" arguments. Yeah, they are terrible and do terrible things, but we aren't children and we don't have to fall for every single one of their tricks. Obtaining knowledge is as simple as typing and clicking. No reason why blacks should be regurgitating an ignorant white person's view of Africa.

Our (euro/white centric) public education system in the U.S. does not really educate us about the rest of the world. It barely discusses U.S. minorities, most of us can't point out maps of major continents and countries of the world outside of the U.S. When we are encouraged to study world history, it is centered around Europe (AP exams are available for U.S. and European history, but not other parts). This is why black and white folks (and Asian Ams and Latinos) in the U.S. have the same perception of Africa, and why most of us don't even know that we need to re-condition our perceptions.

Yea, but ignorance is used to label people who refuse to learn ... I doubt black people are out here refusing to learn about what Africa really is. It's the act of willful ignorance.

At any rate, it isn't so cut and dry as, "obtaining knowledge is as simple as typing and clicking." Because you have to actively feel as if you're being misled and seek the truth. If all people are presented with is one way, then it takes something to make them question it. THEN they can look to change their view on Africa.

And why is that my g? That's because of the west's constant media portrayals of the african continent as a dark and dreary land full of warlords, disease, corruption, instability, and people that are seen as more akin to animals then people. They want to paint Africa and it's 53 countries as uncivilized and untamed where only the "civilized" west can tame it. Since black Americans by and large tend to go by the narratives presented by the western media that paint Africa as such...ofcourse their perspectives are skewed. I'll admit, it even took me a while to find reliable news sources that presented an accurate and non-biased viewpoint of African affairs and politics straight from the horses' mouth, and I'm African myself. Then again, I see where you're coming from, many black americans are too busy with the affairs in their own lives and in their own country to even try to bother to gain another perspective or seek basic information regarding African affairs and developments within the continent.

real shyt even coming from the islands were you will really get your life took over disrespect. we didn't know much about black Americans but the things white missionaries will past, tourist usually white, and shyt that was allow to be broadcast on tv. a lot blacks that come from something will not understand that ...they can't too far removed

now being raise here i seen a lot black folks and myself fall victim of propaganda on others. If you want to keep it real even with the information and tools we have black folks in America still fall victims of propaganda and disgust views on other black folks

just look at how we react on ebola on social network, twitter, friends, and to co-workers. its a mindset we need to break
