I read that there were plenty of ancient books/gospels that were just as "authentic" in terms of age (some were even older) as the books that are generally accepted. Written within 40-60 years after the life of Jesus, which is exactly the same time span the main four gospels (which were written by anonymous authors we know nothing about) were written.
Some of these books contradicted much of the orthodox views of Christianity. I think the "Gospel" of Thomas was actually on some 5 percenter ish for example.
Now I'm vaguely aware of the story of how Constantine got together a bunch of scholars and they decided on what should be in the new testament and what should be left out. Much of these "books" were left on the cutting room floor because of the opinions of a select few people who didn't have access to scientific dating techniques like we do today that could have verified the age of the various text in question. They basically came to their conclusions based on "opinion" and nothing else.
So basically every Christian that claims the new testament is the "word" of God is essentially putting faith in those few men in hopes that they got the story right. (and those few scholars/editors of the bible were putting their faith in the hopes that the anonymous authors of these holy books simply didn't just "make it up")
Did I understand that right?

Jesus in Saying 3 of the Gospel of Thomas."...the Kingdom of God is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living Father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty, and it is you who are that poverty." -
