So I was too small to know what was going on during its release

But when I listen to Vol. 1 its obvious Jay decided to "dumb down for his audience to double his dollars" after Reasonable Doubt

So my question is

What was it about the reception of RD that would make Hov wanna dumb it down

I mean I watched the RD doc. about how ppl were misunderstanding his album

But older brehs tell me..what were the reviews and general reception of that album like, that would cause him to dumb down after that?:patrice:

Camel calling his fans dumb while trying to convince the world that he actually had something of importance to say.

To make that dough, but if you look at it. He didn't dumb down THAT much.

I feel he did..he left all dem metaphors and references that flew over nikkaz heads(im assuming) out of vol. 1

Focused more on storytelling and kept it more simple

Which is why Im asking what about the reception of RD would cause Jay to do that?

Nothin' too deep, honestly...

He was more into spitting and telling the stories on RD, hadn't quite mastered how to make 'singles' and all that yet...

On the albums afterwards, he headed more into that direction and structuring songs, made the verses more accessible.

It kinda shows in the singles from RD why he made that choice tho'... they were puttin' out records like 'Dead Presidents' as singles, which were hot on the street but weren't movin' those units. It took a song like 'Ain't No nikka' to move 'em... :manny:

In some ways he regressed, in other ways he improved IMO. He wasn't as complex, but he was more able to make verses people knew all the words to...

He's damn near 45 and doesn't have much else to talk about besides lifestyle at this point.

he's not going to make political statements cause he's not dumb enough to alienate his audience...he'll let kanye do that since it'll pass as "artistry"

But he hasn't regressed THAT much. He can still break it down if he wants to.
