Sonics fans, the time has come. It's not hyperbole to say that this is the biggest moment in the years-long attempt at getting a new arena in the SoDo neighborhood.
For weeks - neigh, months - you've been asking what you can do and we've told you to just wait and see what happens. Well, to quote The Doors, "the time to hesitate is through." There hasn't been a lot in this whole situation that has been within our control. However, we can control our own voices and now is the time to let them be heard. In exactly one month's time, the Seattle City Council is holding a public meeting on whether or not they should vacate a block of Occidental Ave S to make way for a multipurpose arena that will house the NBA and NHL, in addition to concerts, political conventions, and other major events. The Port of Seattle doesn't want that arena built for their own selfish reasons and they have resorted to some underhanded tactics to push their agenda.
We need to remind the council that we are here and that we are a presence to be reckoned with. We need to remind them that the last people who let the Sonics go are no longer here. We need to let them know that we want hockey in this town. We need to remind them of the revenue that will be generated by the events in SoDo, revenue that will go to Tukwila - or nowhere at all - if they don't act.
You wanted a call-to-arms, well here it is. We need all of you. We need you to arrive early to make that room a sea of green and gold, spilling over into the hallways and even out into the streets. We need all of you raising your voices, telling the council that WE WANT OUR SONICS BACK!These opportunities don't come along often and when they do, we need to capitalize. This may be our last chance to get our team back and we can't let our elected officials throw that chance away. Let's make it happen, Sonics fans.
This is literally the most important part of the process that we have any kind of control over. If you can't make it to the meeting, wear your green and gold, wherever you are. Post pictures and comments on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #BringBackOurSonics. Let's make March 15 "National bring back our Sonics day." Scratch that, we've got people here from Germany and Russia, let's make it "Internationalbring back our Sonics day." Send emails to the Seattle City Council. Let them know that you won't go down without a fight. Chris Daniels said that the vote would be "a battle." Well, we are the Sonics army. And we are ready.
