Sony is reportedly in talks to sell its PC business

Sony's had much more success in gaming and home entertainment than with its PC division, so the latest news isn't exactly shocking. According to Japanese news service Nikkei, the company is looking to sell its personal computer business to an investment fund for as much as 50 billion yen (or $492 million). When we reached out to Sony for comment, a rep directed us to a statement responding to a similar rumor three days ago:

A press report on February 1, 2014 stated that Sony Corporation ("Sony") is discussing with Lenovo Group ("Lenovo") the possible establishment of a joint venture for the PC business. As Sony has announced previously, Sony continues to address various options for the PC business, but the press report on a possible PC business alliance between Sony and Lenovo is inaccurate.

While that doesn't address this latest report specifically, the statement makes it clear that selling off Sony's PC business isn't out of the question, if not extremely likely. And as Nikkei reports, parting with this division would enable Sony to shift its focus to smartphones -- the company has released several critically acclaimed Xperia handsets in the last several years, though it still struggles to compete with the likes of Samsung, the top Android phone maker by a landslide. In any case, stay tuned.

Sony looking to sell PC business to investment fund

20140204-SonyVAIO_article_thumbnail.jpg

TOKYO -- Sony is in talks to unload its sluggish personal computer operations to investment fund Japan Industrial Partners, part of a business overhaul designed to shift focus to smartphones, The Nikkei learned Tuesday.

Under the plan, the fund will establish a new company to which Sony will sell its entire PC business. The sale price is estimated at 40 billion yen to 50 billion yen ($391 million to $489 million).

The new entity would continue to sell PCs under the Vaio brand and also handle after-sales service. To facilitate the transfer, Sony will take only a small stake in the firm, which will try to solidify its business base at home. While the company may maintain operations in overseas markets where the Vaio brand is well-known, it will withdraw from most countries and regions.

Sony's PC business has a staff of roughly 1,000. Many of them, including executives, will be taken on by the new firm, but some others will be transferred to other departments within Sony. The parties are discussing having Sony's PC site in Nagano Prefecture continue handling R&D and production under the new company.

The sale of the PC business will result in disposal losses, pushing Sony into a net loss for the first time in two years for the year ending March 31 -- a reversal from the projected 30 billion yen in profit. With TV and digital camera operations languishing, its electronics business is performing below expectations.

The Japanese consumer electronics titan made a full entry into information technology equipment by launching the Vaio brand of PCs back in 1996. Its annual PC shipments peaked at 8.7 million units but are now projected to fall to 5.8 million units this fiscal year. Sony was the ninth-ranked PC maker in the world with a 1.9% share of all PCs shipped during the January-September period of 2013, according to U.S. research firm IDC. Although Sony does not disclose earnings for the PC business, the segment is believed to be bleeding red ink.

Sony reportedly in talks to sell PC ops, shares jump
Feb 4 2014, 12:37 ET

  • The Nikkei reports Sony (SNE +5.1%) is in talks to sell its Vaio PC unit, and is looking to receive ¥40B-¥50B ($394M-$492M).
  • The report follows one over the weekend stating Lenovo (LNVGY), which last month struck deals to buy Motorola Mobility and IBM's x86 server unit, is in talks to acquire Sony's PC ops. Sony called the report inaccurate, but admitted it's exploring options for the business.
  • Sony shares have shot higher on the Nikkei's report. Investors like the idea of unloading a loss-generating unit that has struggled to deal with declining PC salesand tough competition from Lenovo, H-P, and others. The company's FQ3 report is due on Thursday morning.
  • Thanks to both the Sony report and a massive equity selloff, Lenovo shares are down 16% in Hong Kong over the last two days.

I honestly thought it's TVs would go before their computers, oh well... time to get out of a :flabbynsick: business while you can. I actually liked VAIOs though, especially since I found out about PS3 remote play.

:childplease: I actually looked at their Year End financials the other day. Sony's Total Revenue & Total Assets is on par with Microsoft's. Sony is Fine, they just need to get their shyt straight. Selling off the money-bleeding PC business was the smart decision.

Funny thing is Sony doesnt sell PCs
They sell notebooks which are not PCs
:ohhh: When did Sony stop selling Desktop PCs?

Isn't it weird that Sony doesn't currently make a 7-inch or 8-inch Tablet? I hope they use this oppertunity to go all-in with Mobile/Tablet division.

@satam55 they've been heading in the right direction. Especially with their mobile business. One of the greatest moves they've made was buying out Ericson for their share of the smartphone game. Damn them SonyEric phones was fugly. Dropped them nikkas and started coming out with hot shyt off the bat.

Insane because they were LITERALLY on the ground floor with the Walkman, TVs, stereos and all kinds of other consumer electronics. They fukked up by not transitioning the Walkman brand into a legit iPod competitor while pushing MiniDisc :snoop:. And then they were adamant at producing their own proprietary storage mediums when XD and SD cards (along with USB drives) were building serious momentum.

Yeah, they hit a homerun with PlayStation, but a console cant support a brand of that size. Then, they bungled the SonyEricsson thing at a time when Nokia and Motorola (with the RAZR) were killing the game, and their PCs/laptops looked cool enough to be one step ahead of the other Windows PC makers.

and it's a bit TOO late to START offering 7"-8" tablets now, they should have been first to markert with those types of devices 2 years ago. They invested heavily into e-Ink and e-book readers and that shyt went nowhere. Now they're playing catchup to Google, Samsung, and Apple. Therein lies their problem.
