Can anyone fill me in on these headphones? Seems like they're an industry standard, having been around since the early 90's.

I have them. On my 2nd pair. First ones lasted from 1995 to early 2013.

Not much to say about them. They're the standard for a reason. Cop them and you'll be happy.
