Mark Cerny said in interviews (Digital Foundry, March 2025; Tom's Guide, July 2025):
- Sony is working on "the next evolution of PSSR"
- Target is something "very similar to FSR 4's upscaler" for 2026
- It's the "full-fat version," not a cut-down algorithm
- Sony co-developed FSR 4 with AMD through Project Amethyst
So a major PSSR update is coming. The rest is speculation.
The rumors:
Source is Gust_FAN, a Japanese leaker with a decent track record (previously leaked the PS5 Slim design).
- Q1 2026 (by end of March), free system update
- New lightweight neural network requiring less frame time
- Can upscale from lower base resolutions than the current 864p requirement
- Reduced shimmering and ghosting
- New resolution options: 1440p and 1080p at locked 120fps
- Games at 70-80fps now could hit 120fps
- Automatic upscaling for legacy games (PS1, PS2, PSP)
Sony hasn't confirmed any of these specifics. But if we get half of this it would fukking rule.
