The Jimmy Butler-Derrick Rose so-called feud needed some clarity.

It was provided Wednesday, as a former member of the Bulls said in a phone interview, “Personally, the two are great. Professionally is where they have a difference of opinion.’’

According to the source, Butler considers Rose a friend, but “doesn’t have a lot of respect for his work ethic.’’ In Butler’s mind, Rose was considered the face of the franchise, and if the face of the franchise wasn’t busting his butt in practice every day, especially last season, what was the message to the rest of the team?

“We all saw this coming,’’ the source said.

The source said that Butler also took note of a Rose comment in the playoffs last season, in which the Bulls point guard was asked if Butler had reached superstar status, and responded, “I think it’s going to take a little minute for Jimmy to get there.’’

That explains Butler coming into this season, beating his chest about a lack of leadership and how he’s the one willing to change that. And it’s been more than just words.

“I’m telling you, the amount of work he puts in … even during two-a-days, he would still come in a third time,’’ coach Fred Hoiberg said of Butler. “I mean the guys is unbelievable how much energy he has. He’s just so dedicated to putting the right things in his body, his training, and he wants to continue to add to his game every year. I take my hat off to him. It’s been fun to see everything he’s been able to do out there on the floor.’’

Butler’s teammates have noticed as well. It was Butler who grabbed Doug McDermott this summer, and brought him to San Diego to work out. And it’s been Butler that’s been getting all the young guys in the gym for extra work.

Butler is basically all in on trying to become the superstar that Rose has never understood how to be.

“I was fortunate enough, I played with a guy you might remember named Kevin Garnett,’’ Hoiberg said. “He was one of the best. Everyone followed because of the amount of time guys like that put in the gym. It’s not an accident that guys like that are superstars. When Michael [Jordan] played here, that was another great example of a guy that just pulled everyone with him. And Jimmy wants that.

“He wants to assume that role with leadership, getting guys with him. He had Doug with him for a couple weeks in San Diego, working out with him, and I think that’s a testament to what he wants to do as far as team goals, when you’ve got a guy that’s one of the best players in the league that also works the hardest.’’

A work ethic that Butler won’t be putting the brakes on anytime soon, even with a new five-year, $95-million contract signed this offseason.

“It’s something I have to do if I want to try and take this team to the next step, the next level,’’ Butler said of taking the lead. “Obviously, the ultimate goal is a championship, but I got to bring something new every year. And I just think that leadership this year is key because I’ve been going so hard in practice.

“Teams, they follow. My teammates follow what I do. If I’m in practice and I put my hands on my knees, I’m [ticked] off, they look at me and, ‘Oh, Jimmy’s doing it, I can do it.’ It’s contagious. It’s a building block, but contract or not, I still have to lead.’’

Derrick Rose says feud with Jimmy Butler wouldn’t exist if they weren’t ‘two blacks’
WRITTEN BY MATTHEW SCHWERHA POSTED: 10/07/2015, 01:58PM

During NBA media day on Monday, Derrick Rose spoke with NBA.com’s Steve Aschburner about a variety of topics.

Naturally, the conversation turned to a reported rift between Rose and Bulls teammate Jimmy Butler.

Derrick Rose makes it very clear that his priority list starts with free agency in two years
Rose asserted that the feud between he and Butler wouldn’t exist if they weren’t ‘two blacks.’

Below, read Aschburner and Rose’s exchange:

Aschburner: Jimmy Butler took his game to an All-Star level over the last several years. Much of it while you were gone. So when you came back, people started to wonder ‘now how are those guys playing together?’ The word feud was thrown out there. What’s the key to having two alpha dogs in the Bulls backcourt?”

Rose: I don’t think it’s about that. I just think that it’s a big picture. We’re two blacks. African-American guys that’s on the team. We’re just trying to find a way to get going. I think if it was the other way around it wouldn’t be that way. But, it’s just my honest opinion about it. And I just felt like me and Jimmy never had a feud. I remember seeing Jimmy in college play with my friend in JUCO. From JUCO to Marquette. Marquette, all the way up here to an All-Star. I have nothing but joy and excitement whenever you talk about Jimmy. I think it was just something to talk about at the time.

Rose says it starts with him being the point guard and general on the floor to get everybody their looks and keeping everyone happy.

Sarah Spain: Derrick Rose wants to have his orbital looking right for son’s graduation
WRITTEN BY DAN CAHILL POSTED: 10/07/2015, 01:50PM

ESPN reporter Sarah Spain has always been a Derrick Rose supporter—until the recent developments in the first two days of Bulls training camp.

First it was Rose’s comments on Monday about his future and family; then the eye injury in Tuesday’s practice.

Spain didn’t mince words in her comments on ESPN radio:

“We’re coming up to our last straw here, where we’re having trouble defending him. Not just because of the latest injury, which by all accounts is a total accident and not his fault in any way. You gotta feel bad for him. But it just adds on to this pile that’s keeps getting bigger and bigger. …

“The patience is running so thin here in Chicago for our hometown boy. He could be out anywhere from five to 28 games, but with Derrick Rose is could be all season. Who knows. You know, he want to have his orbital looking just right when he goes to his son’s graduation in 18 years.”

Listen to Spain’s full comments captured by ESPN’s “First Take” [3:40 to 4:30 mark]:

I've supported DRose all along – go back & look. And I always feel terrible for injuries, which are out of an athlete's control. (1/2)

(2/2) But he's getting harder & harder to defend w/ every boneheaded statement he makes. Never a great talker, but now completely oblivious.

Derrick Rose proving to be a quick learner after meeting with the coaching staff
WRITTEN BY JOE COWLEY POSTED: 10/06/2015, 11:42AM

The education of Derrick Rose went off without a hitch.

And according to first-year coach Fred Hoiberg, it was more like a re-education.

Hoiberg, as well as several members of the coaching staff, met with the injured point guard at his home Monday, catching Rose up on the new sets that have been added in his absence.

“We’ve added probably three sets, three actions, from when Derrick was here that first day [last Tuesday],’’ Hoiberg said. “You know, he was great. He was in great spirits, a great mood. He’s itching to get back here. He’s got a follow-up appointment [this afternoon], and then hopefully he’ll be able to get out of his house a little bit Wednesday. Then he’s got another full week where he’s got total inactivity.

“His eye is swollen shut, as far as his appearance, but again he’s moving around, he’s great. He just can’t do anything right now to get his blood pressure up, but it was great to see him. We also sent him the file of everything we’ve got going. After the [preseason] game tonight, we’ll have another session with him before we head out of town.’’

That means one more cram session on Wednesday, with the Bulls off to Colorado for a Thursday preseason game with Denver.

According to Hoiberg, Rose was an easy student, especially since he had a good grasp of the new offensive system before he took an elbow to the face that led to the surgery to repair the fractured left orbital. The initial hope was Rose would be back at the Advocate Center to at least watch at the start of this week, but when doctors wanted Rose to stay home with full inactivity, Hoiberg figured out a way to bring the Advocate Center to Rose.

“The good thing about Derrick is he’s been in here since Labor Day,’’ Hoiberg said. “We’ve been able to get a little bit of a head start by watching film and getting in small groups, try to get a little bit ahead of the game going into training camp, so he did pick things up quickly. I’ll say that. And I don’t think it will take long to get that back, especially having, I guess it will be four days before we get back from this road trip, to watch and relearn everything.’’

The timetable for Rose’s return to the court was two weeks after the Sept. 30 surgery, so the biggest concern Hoiberg had was getting the guard back into shape.

“Now it’s about getting his timing back,’’ Hoiberg said. “Normally, you’re at least able to get on a bike and get a sweat, keep that going, get your lungs burning, but he hasn’t been able to do any of that. So I think the biggest thing in those two weeks leading up to the opener for Derrick is going to be all about getting his timing and getting his wind back.’’

Derrick Rose home schooling gets a schedule change
WRITTEN BY JOE COWLEY POSTED: 10/05/2015, 04:41PM

The home-schooling of Derrick Rose again hit a schedule change.

With Rose fresh off surgery to repair a fractured left orbital and told by doctors to stay inside his home to help the healing process, Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg wanted to sit down with Rose on Saturday to go over film and catch him up on all that had been installed since he was injured.

That cram session took place on Monday, and will again happen Wednesday morning, before the Bulls leave for a three-day road trip without Rose.

“He’ll be able to come back in the building when we get back from our road trip and just a couple days after that, he’ll be ready to get back on the floor,’’ Hoiberg said. “We leave Wednesday so we’ll probably try to get over there one more time and see him Wednesday morning. Maybe take some game film over there and show him what we could’ve done, different reads, that kind of thing. I know he’s chomping at the bit to get back here.’’

Rose was injured during the very first practice last week, catching a Taj Gibson elbow in the face and then undergoing surgery. The timetable was set at two weeks, and according to Hoiberg, although Rose has been ordered by doctors to stay in his house, that timetable hasn’t changed.

With Rose sidelined, E’Twaun Moore was scheduled to get the first look at the point guard spot in the preseason game against Milwaukee.

Heated rivalry?

The Bulls eliminated Milwaukee from the playoffs last season, and didn’t exactly make friends. There were ejections, technicals, and several shoving matches, and now the two teams meet Tuesday night at the United Center.

Veteran Pau Gasol admittedly felt preseason games were only to get work in, but said that there could be some different agendas based on what happened last year.

“[Tuesday] is not a crazy, meaningful, intense rivalry type of game,’’ Gasol said. “I’m sure certain guys will have certain feelings about what happened last year good and bad. At the end of the day we have to come out and accomplish our goals whatever our coaches want us to accomplish and have a good game and move on to the next game.’’

Around the rim

Hoiberg said that Taj Gibson (offseason ankle surgery) wouldn’t be ready for exhibition play until “the third or fourth preseason game.’’ The ankle is holding up, but the problem is getting Gibson back in shape after being forced to sit most of the summer. … The Bulls will not only debut a new-look basketball court against the Bucks, but have a new-look locker room, completely updated. … The Bulls announced on Monday that they inked a seven-year partnership with the Polish company Cinkciarz.pl. The agreement is the team’s first global partnership. … According to Hoiberg, rookie Bobby Portis will not only make his Bulls debut against Milwaukee, but should expect heavy minutes. “Bobby Portis will get a great chance to get his first game experience in an NBA arena,’’ Hoiberg said. “I know he’s pumped up about that.’’

A dude that climbed to the top gonna always be on the ass of a superstar that ain't physically reliable, if he feels he ain't puttin in similar work.

If this story is true, you side with Butler, hands down.

True. Been a Rose fan from the start but hey, if Jimmy's putting in more work it has to be acknowledged. Rose's career has taken the turn it has taken, if he's mature and smart he might want to take a back seat to Jimmy. He'll also have less pressure on him.
