Kids might not be able to understand the reason why you spanking 'em, but best believe they know when they get in trouble and if let off the hook enough times, they eventually learn that they'll get away with the shyts and CONGRATS...you've got a sociopath.
Punishment, even physical ones, must be meted but within reason. No tearin' ya babies ass up (Pause) 'cause they was crying in the store for skittles'n'shyt or dropped a plate and got scared, but you don't hit 'em, or put that fear of being hit in 'em to deter them from doing wrong...you creating trouble. Timeouts, Dunce caps and leashes ain't gonna trump a firm a hand when the situation warrants.

I was anti corporal punishment for a long time and for the most part still am.
Ive realized however you can only attempt to reason and deal with a child for so long.
If spanking and especially yelling/belittling is your "go to" move, then yes, you're fukking up as a parent.
But unfortunately pain and fear are excellent motivators to a child. Children are not fully rational beings for much of their life so a little Authoritarianism can indeed save their lives.
