So in this thread http://www.thecoli.com/threads/the-race-track-movement-are-we-for-real-or-just-talk.248095/ I suggested that I might make some alternative history threads like those in another forum I browse(historum). I'm not all that good at making threads but I'll give this a try

How do you keep the Songhai empire alive, and increase its prestige? By the mid to late 16th century, the Songhai empire was going through some political difficulties, after a peak period in the early century. Emperors were getting overthrown by their brothers, and this along with other factors led to instability. It was then finally conquered the Moroccan empire in 1591 over disagreements with the salt mines.. Imagine yourself as the king in the middle of the century, I'll say 1545 because it was this particular year that the King of Morocco sent a letter demanding the Teghezza(sp) salt mines, and the Askia, in response, sent some berber soldiers to pillage a town in the south of the country. He did not use any further force, however.

So keep some things in mind before answering:

-How do you deal with the Moroccan threat? Keep in mind how much it might cost to have an empire on the other side of the Sahara. Destroying Morocco completely without occupying it yourself or putting in a puppet king would lead to a power vacuum, in which more hostiles empires such as the Spanish, Portuguese, or the Ottomans might come in.

-How do you deal with the problem of line of succession? What policies do you enact in order to stabilize the nation, and also modernize its weaponry.

-How do you deal with the Mossi's?

-Do you look south to other African nations/kingdoms/tribes in the guinea in order to cut off the slave trade? trading with the new world?

Looking forward to your responses.
