Both have attended the Oscars several times in the past and both have won. Spike was (understandably and rightfully) THRILLED when he won his first Oscar in 2018.
Staying on “Code” for these two men means continuing to utilize their art in ways that uplift and promote black creativity, which they have done and continue to do in SPADES.
After everything these men have done to push black cinematic art forward the past 30 years, suggesting that them not attending an awards show (in which neither had work that was nominated) as some sort of token and cliched showing of “rebellion” , is nothing more than a cheap insult to their legacies as black men
