i dont understand how some people act like DMX was some sort of flash-in-the-pan.
nor do i understand how people act like his falloff was some unprecedented chit.
i think people's judgement gets skewed when they look at some of his contemporaries who played the game and are still around making subpar music. but that chit is NOT RIGHT. thats just politics & bullchit. im from the era where longevity meant something, and most rappers that made it to the top, would have killed in order to trade up and get a run like DMX.
DMX had the standard 3-album run on top. not to mention the countless guest spots, along with him heading up multiple compilations and legendary tours. in addition to him being a movie star with multiple films under his belt. he basically condensed a 5-year run worth of stuff into 3 years.
and then you had his falloff album, which was still a top seller. nowadays, people are congratulated for topping the charts with subpar albums.
then he came back with his "retirement album" the grand champ which was a hot and did very well on the charts despite being sabotaged by def jam.
1st ballot hall of famer, and arguably a top 10 solo artist ALL-TIME. as a rap star, he has nothing to be regretful about. he did ruin alot of potential movie money tho, but thats really not our issue.
