i dont understand how some people act like DMX was some sort of flash-in-the-pan.
nor do i understand how people act like his falloff was some unprecedented chit.

i think people's judgement gets skewed when they look at some of his contemporaries who played the game and are still around making subpar music. but that chit is NOT RIGHT. thats just politics & bullchit. im from the era where longevity meant something, and most rappers that made it to the top, would have killed in order to trade up and get a run like DMX.

DMX had the standard 3-album run on top. not to mention the countless guest spots, along with him heading up multiple compilations and legendary tours. in addition to him being a movie star with multiple films under his belt. he basically condensed a 5-year run worth of stuff into 3 years.

and then you had his falloff album, which was still a top seller. nowadays, people are congratulated for topping the charts with subpar albums.

then he came back with his "retirement album" the grand champ which was a hot and did very well on the charts despite being sabotaged by def jam.

1st ballot hall of famer, and arguably a top 10 solo artist ALL-TIME. as a rap star, he has nothing to be regretful about. he did ruin alot of potential movie money tho, but thats really not our issue.

Other than Jay & BIG, he was the only 90's era NY rapper that was able to transcend the NY market and appeal to a broad cross section of rap fans nationwide. Easily top 10 to ever come outta NY if not top 5.

First album was excellent. Everything after was meh.
Success wise though he had a tremendous run. His third album was 5x platinum right? And his highest selling I believe?

he lost me musically after the first 2. sales-wise anyone would kill for 5 straight #1's, that may not happen again

i know alot of cats around my way liked And Then There Was X, but i didnt. he still had fire in his voice but the album was a classic example of early 00's cheese production

sounds like you need to go back and read the part i said about skewed judgments.

if you wouldve told me in 1998 that i would still be checking for DMX in 2014, i wouldve laughed in your face.........if you were around before the viacom monopoly, you would understand.

i never even heard the song that youre referring to. im not checkin for X in 2014 like that AND I SHOULDNT BE.

I'm confused. If you're biggin' up X so much, why aren't you checking for him in 2014?

No hostility intended at all, just curious.

im saying im just not checkin for him to do anything groundbreaking at this point. hes old enough to be a grandpa. he had his run. he can drop a horrible 1 mic album for all i care. nothing can hurt his legacy at this point.

i came up when hip-hop was still hip-hop and it was more organic. you didnt have old rappers a decade past their primes being allowed to linger at the top and stink the game up with trash thanks to politics and good business savy.

DMX' run wasnt any shorter than some of the people whose names come up in goat conversations. and he actually put in more work as a top guy than they did. why do people dwell on his falloff like he was hot for a year and then got wack?

X just seemed like he got where he wanted to go in the rap game as far as success and being the top dude at one time.....its like he proved that point and made his mark ...he couldn't be bothered after that. Doesn't mean he still ain't got it...just don't think he care enough to really go hard to show it...
