Ive talked about this multiple times, and the recent wage and college thread brought this back to the forefront.

I want to ask you all, are we really asking for what we are worth as Black people? I have noticed that we tend to undervalue ourselves and settle for pay that is far below what it should be. I use my wife for example. She recently got promoted and is making more than she ever has. She often says that she never thought she would make this much.

This confuses and dissapoints me. She has her masters, tons of exp, lean six sigma, tons of certs. If you never thought you would make this much, wtf were all those qualifications for :gucci:???? Why go through all this work if your goal wasnt to make alot of money??? :dahell:

The stigma of asking someone else how much they make ONLY BENEFITS EMPLOYERS, NOT EMPLOYEES. I think if some of yall knew how much your white counterparts were making for the same job, you would never accept some of these postings.

I know i am greatly simplifying this, as other factors contribute to job choice, but we gotta force this issue more.

What do you guys think? You think this is an issue or am i overblowing this?

Some companies will be honest and offer you more. The current company I work for gave me $20k more than I asked. I have 5, six figure certs. They said they didnt want me to take the job and leave when I get like a bigger offer. Even probably left like 2k on the table.

I was just interested in taking the job and leaving. It's hard for black people to get into these companies despite being over qualify at times. Next go round I will ask for more.

As someone self employed, it’s a battle to make sure you get not just what you’re “worth”, what you need to advance and be successful. Thing with having your own form of making money is that plans and future ideas are very important towards the development of your business, so any project or job taken must advance your personal goal.

At least in my humble opinion. Surprisingly, though, I’ve been getting better at not only getting what I’m worth, but securing future prospects and ideas from simple jobs

This is exactly how it should be, because they are right. You will just leave to go somewhere that offers you the right amount if they fail to. Good for you breh.
