SPIN: Do you use a 1-10 scale on things you play/watch when talking with your friends?

Numbers?

  • Nah, I just say if I like it or not and give a detailed breakdown

  • Yeah, I spit out numbers like a computer.

How does it simplify it?

Explain a 6.5 out of 10 rating for me.

7.0 generally represents an average game, below 7 is slightly below average, and above 7 is slightly above average...

8 and over generally are games that are worth looking at... that is how i personally perceive the ratings.

That actually makes my point even stronger :skip:

Everything is either a 1 star for disapproval or 5 stars if you approve. A like/dislike scale for the most part.
and the results are averaged to give us a number. explain a 3.5 star thread

Not everyone perceives it the same way. A 6.5 on IGN is "OKAY", while a 6.5 on gamestop is "FAIR". Do both of those ratings mean that they like it? Sounds like it...so let's simplify it. Call it a game you like, simple.

Others look at a 6.5 like  I can't buy this. Some won't even buy a game if it overall doesn't reach an 8.0 rating. So many people love Destiny, but can you imagine how much different the player base would be if people saw a like/dislike breakdown instead of this broken ass 1-10 scale?

so why have a 1-5 scale when a like/dislike system will suffice? Nobody will miss the 2-4 options.
it just produces a less accurate number. it's really just changing a 1-100, 1-10, or 1-5 scale into a boolean 1-2 scale. and people are still expecting it to spit out a number at the end. that might be a ratio, percentage, or some system to boil likes/dislikes into a x/5 star rating (Steam user content for instance). it's still a number people will have to interpret

I just don't think it's a natural way of communicating. I like to try to mimic the way we talk in person on the internet. Too much noise and extra numbers are for the most part unnecessary. This has been proven in apps and is slowly turning into the review process as well.

people's jobs are at stake because of this shyt man, is it really that serious?

how people naturally communicate is different from what people expect from a professional review. when I ask a friend if he liked a game, I also don't expect the answer to come in the form of a 10,000 word essay

it's a big world out there, and people are free to get and interpret data from many different sources. some people like numbers, and some people just want to hear...

Numbers don't lie but they can be deceiving

If numbers and reviews matter as much as people pretend they do then the console war should have long been settled.

It's interesting that a lot of the same people that follow review scores religiously will dismiss sales figures when comparing consoles.

Are we comparing numbers or not?

Rotten tomatoes is a bad example. The rating system is based on if people like it or not from what I remember. Not the average review score if I remember correctly.

It has both

Kingsman: 80% (44 positive, 11 negative) with an average score of 6.7/10
