SPIN: Do you use a 1-10 scale on things you play/watch when talking with your friends?

Numbers?

  • Nah, I just say if I like it or not and give a detailed breakdown

  • Yeah, I spit out numbers like a computer.

Well since you want to end the conversation (and no, I don't think we need to talk about this through a PM), I guess there's no more to say. I think I've made my points very clear. I still don't know your point, other than I sound like a robot or something, but okay :manny:

I've worked for the government and all they want to do is quantify everything. I worked in the private sector in market research and they want to quantify everything. I worked in UX and we quantified qualitative shyt. I work in medical research and we of course use numbers. Quantitative data is so useful, because it lets you compare across items. This is why everybody is trying their hardest to quantify everything.

I'm aware of the qualitative shift many want to make. During my phd program, before I became a doctoral candidate, half of my class was qualitative only. They hated numbers. I silently laughed at them and quantified interview data in my qual class :dead:

Numbers make the world go around and are so useful. So, so useful.
You think working for the government and using that as an example is a good one? Since when was this government efficient? Our education system sucks as well :ld:

Also, nobody is denying that numbers are important.

I'm saying the verbiage and the numbers are the same thing. You have a mental scale you use when talking to your friends about a particular thing. You think in words, but those words have meanings. I think in numbers, and those numbers have meanings.

That's why I think arguing against numbers is pointless. When you make qualitative scales using words, you're doing the same thing as somebody using numbers. They both represent the same thing, a scale to measure across.

This thread is all about playing semantics. It makes no sense to me. Take away the number system and you have a word system. Both still have weights and values attached to them. It's just changing the label.
Well if you put it that way, I don't see why you care about the move some reviewers are doing since it's the same thing.

Like I've always said, the more you can differentiate the better. Having 3 categories, like eurogamer wants, is much worse than a 10 point scale.

I want to distinguish between a 7 and a 9. Everything being "nothing," "recommended," and "essential" is too small a scale for me.

It's lazy too. You can rate 20 percentage points the exact same. They're just scared to make an opinion. Like I said yesterday, it's p*ssy.

I worked for the military (the navy to be exact). The U.S. has one of the best, if not the best, militaries in the world. They are an excellent example of why quantifying things is so important

I gotta :snoop: too

This thread :wow:
It's not my fault you don't realize that people don't talk this way.

My argument is that it doesn't sound natural and I really don't see how useful it is when it comes to reviewing media as opposed to a like/dislike system, It's just unnecessary noise. Urbanspoon is another site/app that uses the same system and works just fine, but I would assume a 10 point system would work better for reviewing food as well.

Your whole argument is that something doesn't sound natural, so we shouldn't use it. Do you realize how crazy that sounds? What a foolish argument that is? :snoop:

And yes, the more you can differentiate the better. This is basic stats. Goddamn. :damn:

You want a binary system that is simple. I don't see how that is helpful at all. I want to know the difference between a 7 and a 9. All you can do with a like/dislike system is say you like it or not. shyt, I might like a game that I think deserves to be scored a 50. And you want me to put that in the same category as a game I like that I think deserves an 87? That's just crazy :snoop:

I realize most Americans hate math and stats, but this thread is becoming ludicrous.

"Numbers don't sound natural, so we shouldn't use them" :wtf:
I never said that...

The thread title is very clear.
