I know it's important for couples to share this info and speak candidly about spending/saving but even so, still awkward

When we became engaged; we discussed finances, religion, kids, etc. We're all about transparency; we know each other's salaries, and we have a plan in place that should allow us to retire comfortably.

There wasn't any awkwardness about it, because it's my significant other; if I can't discuss finances with him, then something is wrong.
