Did NY really have Hip Hop on "smash" in the early 00's?

I'm asking because people really have this notion that The South really ruined Hip Hop in 2005, but gloss over the fact that NY lost its musical identity by 2000. How, we can act like NY wasn't following the West (Rick Rock production, Dr. Dre producing some of the biggest NY records ever). We can act like Timbaland and The Neptunes weren't producing some of the biggest songs out of the East. That's just the sonics.

There were artists like Ludacris and Outkast that were as big or bigger than the biggest NY artist. 50 is the only argument here, but even he had his biggest song produced by Dre and another huge record featuring Nate Dogg. A lot of his album ain't even sound NY.

Commercially, Nas and DMX were the most successful NY acts keeping it all the way NY.
