On a sports tip, I think it's just one of the things that got popular with the internet.

Then you have to think of how good the leagues at marketing their players like with MJ in the 90s.

As a Kobe stan I can say that I've been at war wit nikkaz arguing for over half my life. I think stans are a symptom of the NBA's focus on superstar players, the 24/7 sports cycle , and the internet boom. After the NBA decided to market superstars beginning with Jordan all those player stans became prevalent. How many stans in football or baseball? Only in the NBA does stan-fukkery take place...

I can see why this could be said, and I agree somewhat.

But Stanism is not limited to NBAitude. The main issue with Stanism is often times it blinds people from objectivity, and that happens in all sports.
