Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Tuesday the first, I learned 1 is left jab, 2 is right jab 3 is left hook, 4 is right hook, 5 is left uppercut and 6 is right uppercut. Odds left, evens right

Thursday the third, I sparred with trainer and another newcomer to the gym - my defense is otherworldly impeccable, I’m impressing myself with it and surprising myself with it

I don’t have the proclivity to step in and engage offensively, I threw mostly jabs to the body to see where I could land them and what my distance was. This was a half speed sparring kind of thing, mostly experiencing the movements and response to someone coming at me

Saturday the gym was closed, presumably due to 4th of July the night before

This previous Tuesday we were back to mitt work

And yesterday, sparring again. Picked partners around the room and just kind of sparred each other each round. Different skills levels, and different weight classes, and one is a girl

Me and one other person did not wear headgear. I looked on the rack to see if there was headgear available and then concluded that I wouldn’t know how to put it in, it might not fit correctly causing me to adjust my head and neck to make it sit properly and it might move … something I saw it doing with one of the boxers going the hardest in there (he was inside of the ring), most of the other sparring was taking place outside of the ring

First sparring opponent, we did two rounds 2 head shots rolled off of me but landed … kinda, not clean though. I smile and laugh when opponents

I’m new at this and I realize this expression may inspire “I want to wipe that smile off his face” mentality, I just in general laugh when I’m fearfully nervous, so I then remind myself to be even more defensively guarded and mostly increase my movement. I eventually realize I can get two jabs to the body before he really responds with a hook to the head, but I block, parry or move away from all punches. The jabs I land are just taps, taking what they’re giving me but also keeping them distanced from me. Coach chimed in that I need to double up on the combinations to give him something to think about - I’m not ready for that, I genuinely feel what I’d have to do to be offensively effective would require me to exert more force than would be appropriate for sparring

And I felt like

But I’m watching and I’m getting a sense of “oh, yeah …. This guy’s about to engage, about to attack, etc.

Next I am sparring with some travel kinda kid. Remember when you played youth sports and then there was that kid in your regular town league who had the travel team experience and thus often had the bag with all the gear, kind of like that kind of young fella. This dude was actually intimidating, my mouth guard was in so I didn’t verbally have the ability to say “I’m not ready for this yet, don’t wanna slow you down” I did specifically circle around him for 3 minutes, at one point I made light of this by pretending to check my watch (I wasn’t wearing a watch), I looked over at the time. He really didn’t throw any punches at me. He had a great stance and was doing these little circles with his head as he was stepping toward me, little stutter steps that reminded me of baseball batter. I literally avoided him, I’m clearly outmatched and don’t have headgear on, the learning lessons are too obvious

Okay next the girl the skill level of the girl allows me to box exactly the way I wanna box, nonetheless I don’t make contact with her. I block all of her wide shots and feint to shoe her where I would’ve hit and give her time to react to slow throws. Nontheless I was able to utilize 52 blocks against her because my natural skill level is higher and my fear of opponent was none existent

But I’m not wearing head gear and the next opponent is at least 6 foot 4, probably more. I’m 6 foot 1, 145 pounds. This guy’s at least 190 pounds easy, probably more he was shaped like Tyson Fury

Mind you, I’m not wearing head gear and he is literally a heavyweight, he starts throwing these literal bombs at my head, I got a few light jab to the body on him. I got the sense that made him feel an invitation to come at me because there was no consequence

And I had these feeling that there’s an understanding about this, like when people are sparring the girl. I was practically doing patty cake with her (but I literally got to use 52 blocks :banderas:

She even said, “I wish my defense was as good as yours, you make me feel like a chihuahua” and I’m thinking, it would be easy for your defense to be this good if your opponent was throwing such wide shots at the body, my mouthguard was in but I wanted to show her that I’m literally just moving my elbows down. But in retrospect, she threw no headshots - maybe because I didn’t have headgear

Any tips on how to properly fit headgear?

And am I right to feel like there should be an understanding in these regards? Should I just decline sparring outside of my weight class?
Honestly in retrospect, the kind punches he was throwing in sparring were a bit ridiculous, he was literally throwing overhand rights like a baseball pitcher, they were easy to avoid but in all reality for me to be effective against someone of such disparity requires me to end things quickly and swiftly and thus there’s necessity for more force than should be exerted in sparring

I am paying $100 a month for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

Was it a circle or a U shape when he stepped?

I’m not a fan of group training. I’m also not a fan of sparring immediately but this seems to be more of a fitness type thing… no one really sparring sparring

As far as head gear…idk. What kind are they using? You could always ask the coach/trainer about it though since it’s their equipment.

Kind of a U shape, it was very constant motion, definitely seemed like there were some full circles in there, honestly it was kind of intimidating. The idea that someone is going to be seeking to counterpunch with some perfect form in a well-trained sharp move kind of way. Got the sense that this guy was a sharp shooter or counter puncher

It feels like a hybrid of fitness boxing, there are some people there that compete but the gym isn’t open regularly like a boxing gym

I’m gonna get a tape measure next time I’m at a store that sells them so I can measure my noggin, I’ll just get whatever has the best reviews on Amazon. Just want it to fit right
You are sparring already, less than 2 weeks into starting Boxing?
First Thursday, this was a selling point for me nut today someone said they broke their nose first month in sparring, now I kind of wish I asked more because I’m wondering why that’s acceptable for sparring

Today we had bag work, ended class with 4 rounds on the heavy bag

First round, fastest strikes from furthest extension, second round, hardest punches
Third round, both fastest and hardest. I hit the bag way better than I did during my teenage foray into boxing
Fourth round left and right hitting the bag and then dropping to the ground when coach said to

Getting up was harder than I imagined

He was rolling

He was definitely going to knock you tf out if you tried some cute shyt.

Yeah, I know the types of places. The Mayweather gyms be like that. And I have homegirls that took some classes at some in NYC.

Like I said, I don’t agree with any full contact sparring really as a novice. It sounded more like a feeling out exercise than actually sparring.

Idk.. its always reckless to me. These are random ass people that most just want to get in shape and learn how to defend themselves which is cool.

My coach used to teach classes but I never attended. I helped but he trained me 1v1. It was just small local classes to military guys but it was cool. But some cats would try to “spar” with me after only a couple days in class and we would do what you guys did.

I would try to just guage with how serious this person is and what he’s trying to set up/do. Mainly watching.

Sparred a real HW pro once and it was humbling. Dude looked like he was ass but he absorbed punches and thats when I definitely knew there were levels to boxing.

Sparring should be eased into for safety reasons… or you end up with cats that never been in a fight in their lives, or never been in a fight in decades getting their noses broke.

Did they even teach/train you how to take a punch?

And I mean a real punch
It’s kind of difficult to connect cleanly on me, if I’m not blocking the punch I’m moving and it’s natural for me to move with the punch to the point I just bounce back. I’m good at maintaining distance and making use of the space available to me, I can see my movement working it’s just what will happen once someone gets to me … will I drop my guard and get popped or will I respond effectively giving my opponent something to think about

With that said, I do feel working this out at 3/4 speed in a playful manner will allow me to be able to learn how to to respond to the various looks I will see from a trained boxer’s punch
I keep distance, move a lot and maintain distance with a light jab to the body

Proper footing as I’m changing angles is a major focus that’s new for me and responding when I’ve been caught, not dropping my guard during body shots. I just haven’t been caught yet and feel like it’d be best to avoid sparring with the actual boxers unless they agree to take things down a notch -

One young fella looks like Biggie Fury, he was at least cruiserweight, he was throwing Deontay Wilder like bombs at my face while I wasn’t wearing headgear, I would dodge, move and block them literally almost jumping back as I blocked them

But no, and to be hundred percent honest I haven’t been taught how to block a punch either, with done mitt drills where you’re supposed to get it but not the proper ways to block and the way to block different kinds of punches

Boxing for fun (no money) and taking headshots as an adult doesnt seem like a good idea...
especially if you just started

youre basically paying someone to take away some of your braincells

with that said...
getting boxing lessons is something ive always wanted to do.

You gonna get urself hurt lol. And sparring that early with no head gear. Your gym trolling ahch.

I don't want to come off like a dikk but any good shyt you think you doing, it isn't real cuz the moment you go against someone who is a lil bit decent and trying its gonna be some humbling dbz type shyt. If you can make it thru that and not discouraged keep going but we all have had that come to god moment in there :francis: nvm sparring one of the pros.

Title has good headgear. Gloves too, the pro mexs are what I have. Avoid hayabusa for gloves as they thumb support is terrible for boxing, but they headgear is good imo.

Oh you were asking seriously.

It depends on what your goals are/were.

I actually met my coach at a gym working out. He corrected me and we started working out together then he told me about the class and he was training other young kids for junior olympics and stuff.

So thats how that came about and I preferred the 1v1 because there were specific things I wanted to work on and he was actually the one who helped me develop my fighting style. But I also trained as a kid, which is why I needed a new style since I hadn’t trained since I was a kid.

1v1 is good for developing skill but classes help imo with overall fitness and basics.

So not to be even more long-winded, I would start with the classes if you never trained before. I trained on and off as a kid and so did most of my homeboys.

i started with 1 on 1 training I think if you can afford it and the trainer is good its worth it. A lot of bad habits will be snuffed out with a good eye watching you build your foundation

I do agree with this

I guess I am thinking more along the lines of the conditioning part. You have to even be in a certain condition to hold your gloves up for a long time, which you gonna need in the 1v1 skill training part

But there’s no really wrong way to start… other than with sparring

facts, I've always been a gym rat and in shape and that initial learning period was no joke as far as conditioning. Just coming of the street to do that 1v1 training, the trainer is gonna take ur money for sure but you may not be getting the full power of that training if you can't perform for a long while and you have to take mad breaks n shyt.

starting sparring even just the touch and go op is talking about is dumb asf tho imo because new people are fukking spazzes and are going to hurt each other lol
