LGBTQ groups barred again from openly marching in Staten Island St. Patrick’s Parade
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — LGBTQ need not apply.
That was the message Sunday from Larry Cummings, head of the Richmond County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, when three community groups went to Willowbrook’s Holy Family Church to submit their applications to have their groups march in the parade.
Carol Bullock — executive director of the Pride Center of Staten Island, one of the LGBTQ groups that tried to apply — said she wasn’t expecting much more than that after having her application denied in recent years.
“I think they need to educate themselves on all the work that we do, and understand that we don’t want to make it a pride parade,” Bullock said after having her application denied. “We just want to be included and march under our banner. I don’t know what the solution will be.”
Alex Carr, who’s on the center’s board of directors, tried to have a conversation with Cummings telling him about his lifelong residency on Staten Island, and the bar his grandmother owned on Forest Avenue called Emily’s Keyboard.
He described his grandmother as a “big supporter” of the annual parade, and asked Cummings if there was anything the applicants could do to “meet him halfway.” The parade organizer didn’t say much in the church’s crypt, but responded to Carr’s question with a simple “no.”
