it's a service that sells digitally distributed games on PC

it started with just their (Valve) own games, but now they sell most games that available on PC
selling games digitally is pretty much "100% profit", in that there's no cost of a physical disc, or the cost of distributing and selling that physical disc. so they can get away with selling games dirt cheap
Steam sells digital downloads of games.
they also have sales that set the PC gaming world on fire.
