From their LinkedIn: Randal Seriguchi, Jr. on LinkedIn: “This is what happens at…

This is what happens at the local government level every day when we're not watching.

The liquor store we're replacing with a learning center wants to relocate on the same block where our site and children will be. We're firmly opposed to that and successfully prolonged approval of that request.

Unfortunately, that still didn't stop some community members from completely shocking us with self-inflictive commentary. Listen carefully to this (longer) clip. If the city of San Francisco can potentially approve a liquor store to co-locate on a block next to a learning center, then it can happen in anywhere.

Apparently the liquor store wants to move 4 doors down on the same block.

I encourage everyone to watch the whole thing but start at 2:40 to see all the fools wanting the store to stay.

On one hand I understand both arguments.

But our educational success is the more important factor.

Great thread. I'm going to drop a story I ran across last week involving a marijuana dispensary in PG county. Not a education vs liquor situation, but it's always cool to see how local issue play out.

Does the now displaced liquor store wants to move four doors down from their original shop? If so, how did they get displaced in the first place? Edit: I just read an article about the owners (the male owner was actually speaking on behalf of the school in the video) of the space wanting to improve the area via a school. They sent the liquor store an eviction notice and now we seem to be here.

The optics of the video are damning to me. You have three white people speaking on behalf of keeping a liquor store in what I presume to be a predominantly black area and the owner of the store seems to have roots from the middle East. Whereas on the other end, they're all black people (although the name Seriguchi probably has Eastern Asia roots) fighting for the removal of one of SIX!!! liquor stores in 7 blocks. I have to side with education although I do hope they can flourish in that area and be provided with the resources to be successful. I've witnessed a lot of after school programs start off well and then flame out quickly due to lack of resources and/or support from the community.

Seems a little disingenuous for them to speak about virtues, values, and feeding families but still wanting him to keep the alcohol license. I'M sure alcohol is a large part of his sales, which is why he (understandably) wants to keep selling it. They're acting like they can't get their drank from one of the other options in the area.
