Stephen A. Smith Backs McGregor: Conor is No Racist, Not at All!
Last week, UFC superstar Conor McGregor was hit with a variety of criticism, with some feeling that he made comments that were racist in nature during his four city with Floyd Mayweather Jr. to promote their August 26th boxing match at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McGregor, a UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, has never had a professional bout and is a big betting underdog, but can still expect to make $100 million from the fight.
McGregor first came under fire when he said to Mayweather at a press conference in Los Angeles last Tuesday, "Dance for me, boy". Things did not get any better when McGregor said he was "black from the waist down" during a press conference in Brooklyn.
Mayweather played things up to get under McGregor's skin.
"Racism still exists," said Mayweather. "I’ve got a diverse team. It’s all about treating people how you want to be treated. You have to give respect to give it back.
"He totally disrespected black women, he called black people monkeys and he was disrespectful to my (13-year-old) daughter. I’m not going to stoop that low to talk about his wife or child. There’s certain levels and you don’t stoop to or cross. I love everyone."
ESPN's Stephen A. Smith is not buying the idea that McGregor is racist.
"This notion that Conor McGregor was racist or whatever, I don't want to hear that, and I don't believe that for one second," Smith said to Sporting News. "As an African-American, I did not look at Conor McGregor and say, 'He is talking to me.'"
"To me, it is him against Mayweather. I did not view it as him talking against black people. I know the difference and that is not what I got from Conor McGregor at all. He was trying to rattle Floyd 'Money' Mayweather the way he tries to rattle every opponent. And good luck to him because boy is he going to need it."
