Good deal for the Nats if he holds up for the next 4-5 years

Mets know what they have to Pay to keep Harvey and Co.

Literally no contract that high has ever worked out.
This one will be no different.

lest you take a gander at Sabathia, Texeira, Fielder, ARod, Pujols, Verlander, Mauer.....just about every one of those teams (and there are others) would do ANYTHING to trade those guys off the books.

And by the way, this latest Greinke contract will be awful, too.

On 2nd thought...the Felix Hernandez deal has been good so far...even if Seattle hasn't won anything.
But Felix never had TJ surgery.

Good luck, Washington.

He got a hell of a deal, if he stays healthy and rolls for the next three seasons he can opt out and GET MORE MONEY
Him opting out is the best case scenario for the Nationals.

They're not gonna want to sign a bigger contract than 175M for a 31 year old pitcher.

If Sabathia had opted out...the Yankees would be in a way better position than they are now. Rather than spending 25M for a borderline 5th starter.

If he wins say 45 games with an ERA under under three for the next three years combined some dumbass team will give him another big ass contract.

Will it help Washington by opting out yes...but it will help him even more because he will get more money.

If he puts up crazy numbers and they don't win a ring then those teams who are "one pitcher away" will come calling and he will get a second payday.

Great deal for him

Washington already has a payroll of 144M...which isn't huge considering the Yankees and Dodgers.
But 25M for Strasburg moving forward...
Scherzer gets 22M and jumps to 42M per year in 2019.

You gotta figure that Harper gets something like the Giancarlo Stanton deal...which puts him somewhere in the neighborhood of 30M per year.

So right off the bat you're looking at around 100M for 3 guys.
This franchise is gonna hit a 200M payroll fast. Who knows if the DC market is going to handle that. Washington is 20th in attendance this year. They were 11th last year, and 12th in 2014.

So they're really gonna have to find a way to crack into the top 7 or 8...and raise ticket prices like hell to pay for these guys.

@mastermind always tells me Strasburg is the epitome of heart. This should end well.
he was

but something changed last summer. I really think Scherzer being here and being something of a mentor, Strasburg having a terrible start, and then being told he injured, and then working his way back to form in relative anonymity has changed him. He not an emo anymore and dude actually pitches stronger late in games. He shows passion in games now and fights through his struggles, like tonight. He been comfortably our best pitcher post All Star break 2015 until now. Dude has been a legit ace and one of hte best pitchers in the NL post ASG until now. This will be a bargain. Im actually stunned that Boras agreed to this deal now because I think he gets 200 million this offseason based off the start he has had, and he would be the #1 pitcher this offseason. I also thought dude didnt like it in DC. He hasnt really taken to the area like Bryce has.

Also, :umad:

Surprised they got a discount. Even considering his history, $200M seemed certain if he kept up his pace this year.

:russ:

Keep thinking this. Especially since Werth will be off the books by then, and Ryan Zimmerman retires from baseball.

We gonna offer him half a billion, at least.
Oh yeah?

A-Rod, CC, and Tex will be off the books and we'll be paying our prospects in drachmas

We might even let him keep his beard
