Sooo what this guy is saying is to not try? I hate this mentality. Not everyone is going to be world class at something they dedicate their lives to. But if you never dedicate yourself to something you eliminate the possibility of being world class completely. Also, even if you don’t become world class, you likely still become good enough at something to make a career out of it, or at the very least develop the resilience, mindset, habits, and attitudes to become successful at something else.
These outliers are human beings just like you and me. And no, we won’t all be outliers. But you have to give yourself a chance by trying.
And I’ve been around a ton of successful people (millionaires/billionaires, pro athletes, olympians, politicians, etc.) and let me tell you, there’s a formula. Genetics and environmental opportunity play a role, and in the case of something like athletics genetics plays a huge role, but so does simply showing up and doing the right things everyday over time. A lot of it is just consistent effort in the right places compounding over time. Most people just ain’t built for that, to make those sacrifices.
Yall ever spent time around a student who gets 85% on everything? They’re smart and work hard. Now spend some time around the student who gets 95%-100% on everything, they’re also smart but they work MUCH harder than the 85% student. And they get the results to match.
Of course, it all depends on what you want out of life. If you want to be hyper successful, there’s a trade off and you will have to sacrifice things. There’s no way around it.
All this to say — choose the life you want. But don’t diminish the efforts of those who put it all on the line to try.
