GASTONIA, N.C. (WSOC) – A North Carolina store clerk is recovering after he was shot in the arm Friday, but his injuries could have been much worse if his reflexes weren’t as fast.
Scottie Floyd looked almost like a superhero, dodging a bullet from a gun almost in his face.
“I thank God. It was God,” he said.
Floyd actually opened the door for the man who nearly took his life at the Jacob’s Food Mart on Marietta Street in Gastonia.
At the time, Floyd did not know the man had a gun. However, he did notice the man kept his sunglasses and a hoodie pulled over his head.
“I knew the guy was up to something, you know, and that probably saved my life too,” Floyd said.
Floyd said the man did not demand money from him or make a threat. Instead, he asked for CBD cigarette products.
“When I seen the silver of the gun, I knew what he was doing,” Floyd said.
The bullet ended up lodged in Floyd’s forearm, breaking two bones, but fortunately, did not go any further.
“Oh, he’d have shot me dead between the eyes,” Floyd said.
Quickly, Floyd had ducked down behind the store’s counter. He said the suspect tried to shoot again, but the gun failed.
Still, Floyd said he was afraid the man was going to come behind the counter and keep shooting.
Instead, the suspect ran.
Police said he took off for Forest City, located about 40 miles west.
Officials said the suspect shot and nearly killed another man at a downtown event that same day.
Christian Campbell was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill. He is waiting on new charges in Gastonia.
“Prosecute him to the full extent of the law,” Floyd said. “Because he didn’t, he didn’t have no regard for my life. He tried to take my life.”
In his 21 years as a store clerk, Floyd said he never felt the need for a gun. He now plans to get one.
