“never outshine the master” is meant for when you’ve exceeded your teacher/boss/supervisor but you play your role until a better opportunity comes.

The second is about a more personal relationship where one specific person is a big brother/mentor/benefactor and outshining then could have them wilfully derail you or stunt your growth.
