The academy only likes 2 types of race related film.
1.The kind that shows extreme out in the open bigotry contrasted by a white person who sees that bigotry and speaks out against it.
The white character doesnt try to make systemic changes, the white character doesnt challenge power structures, the white character doesnt interrogate his own racism. He does not challenge the cognitive dissonance he feels when he looks at friends and family members and realizes that the people he loves can also be hateful.
For a lot of white people racism is simply a matter of etiquette and interpersonal exchanges.
The second type of racism movie they like is the kind where black people are brutalized consistently and their lives are shown to be a living hell. This kind of film also asks nothing of the audience. At best We are simply meant to accept that it is nobody's fault that the black people in this film are suffering while at worst it is implied that it is the fault of the black characters for making the wrong choices.
