NYC didn't start to become a GOAT level city again until the 2000s and this thread is proof of that :wow:

I was born in 1991 and growing up in 2000s Brooklyn had its fair share of problems but crack era NYC was whole another level of wild :damn:

I heard from muitple people IRL who was teenagers in NYC during the time period this thread is discussing and it was no joke back then

Joe was. I remember him actually being on the streets hustling. He was associated with some very respected Bronx figures. Never knew about Pun until he started rapping.

They’ve been saying Joe lying but OP says he lived it.

The NYC is a cesspool story got its legs in those past eras.

I was born in 86. My bothers were teens in the 90's. NYC in the early to mid 90's felt like streets of rage.

Man, Joe been respected forever before these new age internet nikkaz came along & decide he was fugazi.

That's why I don't listen to they asses.

If Diamond D, Big L, & all those nikkaz fukked with him, who am I to think he's corny? :yeshrug:

I also used to hear about him doing all kinds of wild shyt back in the '90s, that's so crazy, I wouldn't want to talk about it because the statue of limitations don't run out on everything :stopitslime:

Would you do it again if you had to?
The guy who started the thread ain't been on here, since right after he made the thread 🤣

Speaking for myself, if I could redo life, I wouldn't live it the same way again. Granted, the way my life has played out, is what made me who I am today, but I also think we live an existence that I could have made different choices, that woulda made me a more mature and developed man, earlier than I did.

I don't have many regrets, I can count how many things I actually "regret" on one hand---->but that ain't the same thing as saying I'd do everything the same, because I wouldn't.

That makes sense.

This thread should be in the rafters. After revisiting the. Stories in the first half of the thread, you get to understand how New York is such a complex place and it’s extremely hard for most outsiders to understand. People will claim bias against the lore of New York hustlers but fail to acknowledge how you gotta be really fukking good to make it here especially if you are known out of your borough.

You gotta compete with thousands of people in your little neighborhood and then you have to see how you measure against other neighborhoods, boroughs and then cities considering they have killers in all parts of the state and surrounding areas (Jersey, Connecticut, Philly,) along the 95. Add into that mix an international presence of their best people. I know some of us like to think of us immigrants as fleers but sleep if you want. any man or woman that can leave their comforts behind and compete in a gladiator sport like NYC has my respect.

New York will always be king of America and the world. If you can make it here, you really can make it anywhere. Salute to the OP.

When I first starting hustling it was Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, we all liked that fly shyt. By the time I left the streets Nas, Wu Tang. It was a terrible era, but we were around for the golden age of hip hop, the conditions created that music.

Came from a very messed up family environment. It's not that they didn't care, they didn't have the ability to do deal with their own demons and struggles long enough to put effort into keeping me off the streets.
Well said. Very insightful. Dope thread..

Definitely a classic thread here, but just a question, in all of your descriptions of NY's drug game, what do you think the dynamic of that culture is elsewhere?

Nobody amassed a name anywhere without being good at their craft, that ain't a NY-specific skill. The uniqueness in NY is the geography of the area, how everything is so vertical, do more people packed into larger buildings, but there are other places with that physical verticality.

Even without that though, the very nature of trying to make it as a dealer, means having to make it in your neighborhood first, then develop a name and brand with competing neighborhoods, and so on and so forth.

Killers exist everywhere and NY by virtue of being the biggest city here, has more killers in volume, but NY has never been among the most dangerous places per capita, there are places both past and present where murder is much more of a sport than it is in NY. So imagine what growing up in those environments is like, in addition to the fact that immigrants also aren't unique to NY.

Just pointing out that nothing you said is unique to NY but mf's respect NY because NY was the first big city here, so alot of historical trends began there. So we respect NY but only NYers, who grow up in the NY environment, think that they have the most treacherous proving ground---->which is also as homogenous and American as any other characteristic you mentioned, because there are other cities here also think they are the center of the universe 🤣

Being in the streets is a competitive sport in vast majority of places. We (the general public) are more familiar with NY names and faces but it's a 100% fact that there were Nicky Barnes', Alpo's, and whatever figure you wanna name---->there were guys just like this in many other places, back then, as it is now. This thread would always do bigger numbers than someone from another city saying the same shyt.

I would've been with the Ricans on the island or any other facility. A lot of Ricans/Dominicans in New York are of African descent. It's not like the West Coast where Latinos and blacks are both ethnically and racially distinct. My name is Spanish, I spent a lot of my youth in PR... that was/is my culture... In the system at the time black Americans stuck together, West Indians had their own jail crews, and then there were the Latinos. All of us were people of the diaspora to some extent, we just messed with the same ethnicity inside.

I hustled/grew up in mixed areas, but by the time I was in the dope game the crews I was with were dominated by Ricans--black Americans hustled with us (especially on the muscle tip), but the leadership was Rican. If I had to do some sort of stretch, I would find a lot of familiar faces from uptown and a lot of them would've been Rican. It was no beef with or disdain for black Americans (in my case or anyone I was in the streets with as far as I know), you just had to look for who you knew
It’s wild. My people came to the states through Cali. I’ve never been locked up in Cali but my cousins have. Our last name is Spanish but we are 90% African/ 10% Amerindian.

Cali they separate AA’s and Latinos. Every time, we get locked up with the Latinos. I guess they go by name and not color when booking.

90% we are straight though especially if you’re not affiliated. We just tell them we’re Belizean and no issues.

Honduras and Guatemala know about the Garifunas and they respect us.
