and she has another 4 years before she's up for re-election so this is a principled stand not a job preservation one.

She has seen the writing on the wall...the GOP is destroying itself from the inside so in a sense it is a self preservation move because she knows that the events of the past 9 years or so are making it so that in 4 years, anyone who does not seem like a sane moderate Republican will have to look elsewhere for career choices.
