The Fisk Jubilee Singers are a group of vocalists from Fisk University, a historically black college in Nashville, Tennessee, who set out to preserve the African-American musical tradition.
The organization started in 1871 as a means to raise money for the school and has performed for such distinguished audiences such as Presidents of the United States and the Kings and Queens of England. The group sings Negro spirituals as they were passed down from generation to generation in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The site includes many .mp3 samples of many songs performed by the ensemble. The songs, however, are often refined and harmonized; they are not how songs were originally sung. They are sung in the original dialect. Since the group has been in existence since 1871, they have preserved songs that many African-Americans after the Civil War might have forgotten.
