Usually its made by modern kids looking back at the 80s aesthetic with modern eyes combined with some futuristic techno-dystopia thrown in:

Basically a hybrid of the real 80s, the movies they made about the future and the current times. What gets my attention is this recreation of a past that doesn't exist for those that didn't live it. Quite interesting, yes? Speaks about the coming digital world full of recreations...

Can you get jiggy with this?

It’s horrible. And this recreating music from genres before your time is nothing new. People do the same thing with soul music. Be some 21 year old nikka talking about, I’m using the same mic that Fats Domino used, or making they shyt purposely sound like the old soul classics. Even down to the aesthetic. All that recreate the past music the exact way it was type shyt usually come off gimmicky as fukk. nikkas wanna be in the 70s and 80s so bad

Yeah, a load of it is so boring and derivative but what got me thinking was the whole fake past nostalgia for kids that weren't even born then.

That is something new in the game as no other generation did (or could do?) it like this. For those of us who were there the difference between the real and imitation is obvious as they're just churning one isolated section again and again.

When it does hit though its quite delicious.

Respect the good & understand the bad

This is so true and back then we wanted to be in the future. This is a great example:

If only modern rappers would bite this trend and bring it back to the 90s in terms of skills and beat selection...

Dust off the Avirex, unpack the Girbaud.

Drive definitely put the Synth in the Wave and started it all moving. Speaking of do you recognize the break?
full

Like I said, when it hits it hits and thats because this track actually has structure and composition versus a flat loop of synths and Linn drums so many do as they churn out track after track.

Hate that post nostalgia with kids reminiscing about the 90s. It was ok but today is way better.

I hear a lot of it in rap. They already did it improve on it.

Tbh the only rapper I've heard that takes that 90s style to another level is Payroll Giovanni. The other guys are stuck in the 90s
