In preparation for his eighth studio release, the legendary T.I. made his way to Charlotte this week to give fans a sneak peek at what his album Trouble Man has in store and Kiss 95.1 was with him all day long. Starting off with a trip to Turning Point Academy, T.I. spent time talking to the kids about the effects of bullying in support of our Stand Up, Speak Out campaign before heading to LABEL for an exclusive listening party. And let's just say... you're going to really want this album.
Continuing his day of Charlotte travels, he ended up at the Kiss 95.1 studios to sit down with Otis from The "O" Show to talk about how his life has been going, some of the highest and lowest moments of his career and we even got some great parenting advice from the father of six.
With Trouble Man being his eighth album release, it's easy to believe he's had an overwhelming amount of positive and life achieving moments so far. But his humbling answer to his life's highest moment really lets you appreciate that even the biggest names in music have moments where they feel in awe of others.
"Highest of highs would probably be performing to a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden," T.I. began, telling Otis the story of his 2007 Screamfest show in New York when Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Swizz Beatz, Ciara, Kanye West and 50 Cent surprised the arena by all hitting the stage at the same time. "[I was] completely out of my habitat and having Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Puffy, Swizz Beatz among others on one stage at one time. Just ripping and doing us... It was an out of body expeirence. I was an observer at that point and it was my show!"
And what better way to express the complete and utter shock of an immense lineup than by standing back and saying, "that just happened," he laughed. But with every high in life comes a memorable low. "Lowest is probably releasing my last project [No Mercy] while I was in prison and not being able to put it together the way I wanted to and distribute it and work it the way I needed to make it work." While the album did debut at number four on the charts, it received many mixed reviews from critics. But the lows didn't hold him down as he quickly went back to the studio after his prison release to begin recording his latest project.
With eight albums under his belt, T.I. is obviously a man of wise words, great wisdom and life experiences that many people can't even fathom. But the most important thing to him besides his music? His family. With six kids, he's full of important advice for any parent-to-be.
"First of all, don't expect any sleep. Get used to working the night shift, that'll earn you a lot of points with the old lady and it will give you some special bonding time with the baby," he explained effortlessly. "Aside from that, as the child grows just be present, be alert, be aware and just love hard. But you gotta discipline hard too."
And if everything we're doing is all for nothing when the world ends on December 21, T.I. has one last bit of advice to go down swinging.
"Get that album December 15, we want to end this thing on a high note."
