Tearful Deion Sanders recounts Hall of Fame family
McKINNEY Deion Sanders sobbed on the witness stand at his child custody trial Tuesday as he testified about family drama surrounding his 2011 Pro Football Hall of Fame speech.
The former Dallas Cowboy said his estranged wife, Pilar Sanders, caused trouble during his induction speech when she bickered with his daughter from a previous marriage.
I always tried to overlook it, he said about what he called the model and actresss inability to get along with other members of his family. He said the Hall of Fame event, a video of which was played for jurors, was one of the major moments of his athletic career.
Testimony began Tuesday morning in a trial to settle custody issues in the contentious divorce between the Sanderses. Jurors must decide which parent should have the right to determine their three childrens primary residence and set restrictions on where they can move.
In opening statements, Pilar Sanders attorney Luke Gunnstaks said testimony will show that the football star is a playtime dad who shames his children when they fail to make him look good.
Deion Sanders filed for divorce in 2011 and the couple were involved in a heated confrontation last spring at the Prosper mansion they once shared. Since then, theyve had several hearings in the 366th District Court regarding child support, the validity of a prenuptial agreement and custody.
Sanders testimony lasted all day. He spoke about his involvement with his children and his nonprofit sports camp and charter school.
The retired football player and TV analyst told the court he is always present for his children and that he should have the right to determine where his sons and daughter, ages 9 through 13, will live.
Pilar is still searching. She doesnt know what she wants to be, Sanders said of the childrens mother.
During his testimony, he said he does not trust her and that the two dont communicate at all.
When someone tries to destroy everything you are and everything you stand for, thats kind of hard, Sanders said. Its hard to communicate when you know the fabric of that person.
Testimony is scheduled to continue Wednesday morning.
