Ted Cruz blames Detroit decline on democrats

Ted Cruz blames Democrats for Detroit's 60-year decline and says he'd overhaul business taxes to bring manufacturing jobs back to the Motor City and America.

The Texas senator also said at Thursday's Republican presidential debate in Detroit that repealing the federal health care law would restore manufacturing jobs in the country.

Cruz says Detroit is a "great city with a magnificent legacy," but one struggling with rampant crime. He says getting rid of payroll and estate taxes and institution a "business flat tax" would help attract jobs.

Its a shame people actually believe this rhetoric...these business are too blame they get billions in government subsidies but refuse to increase wages unless pressured by unions not to mention that the money saved on a flat tax will probably only go in the pockets of the higher level executives...some people need to wake up and realize that this is 2016 not 1986 some of these jobs that they claim things like reganomics created are never coming back to the Us.

It started with Nixon's opening of China. That enabled manufacturers to go overseas at a whim

Detroit went to shyt for lots of reasons...

Not sure if I would say that.. I don't think China started to have a real effect until the early 2000s.

Three major things fukked up Detroit...
1.white flight and some of the tax back went with it. But that was manageable until....

2.the Japanese started making a far better product than the americans in the late 70s/early 80s. That buy american shyt will only work for so long, when put up against a far better product..

3.Detroit was pretty much a city that was all in on auto manufacturing. The economy was not diversified.

In hindsight the auto companies and works should have hauled ass to make a better or equal to Japan product. Same shyt happened to the American TV industry too, if I remember correctly anyway. And then other time diversified. Detroit in some alt universe is a manufacturing/high tech/IT hub....

Lol. Those auto manufacturing jobs are not coming back.

While you're at it, go ahead and promise to bring steel production jobs back to Cleveland.

Cities like Cleveland and Pittsburgh have already moved on from manufacturing and have economic strategies geared towards service based industries in healthcare, IT, financial services. Politicians know they cannot bring jobs back , throwing around tax incentives in the absence of other factors is probably not enough. Detroit and the big 3 is a good example of what happens when companies are complacent and do not have much competition. Their main competitors in the US are Japanese brands that are manufactured here and not imports. The Camry has been eating their lunch for decades now when they were all over the place with bigger cars and multiple brands until bankruptcy forced companies like GM to shrink their brand portfolio.

They can blame who they want. But foresight was terrible there. Over the years those companies moved to overseas without shame.

I'd love if America was some utopia were services and manufacturing worked together and everybody had 2 cars, a house, and a bad ass stay at home mom with an apron and apple pie.

But that aint the case soooo yeah.

Combination of NAFTA and unions driving up welder salaries to like $50K plus.

So he's probably half right.
