This is ridiculous. You make it seem like it's one (academics) or the other (athletics). Why can't they do both? Stanford does it. And they field twice the number of sports we do. Academics has nothing to do with Barnes letting everyone else pick away the growing Texas basketball talent and his inability to coach offensive basketball. Academics has nothing to do with the terrible QB evaluations Mackie has made the last few years. Academics has nothing to do with the lack of home run power on the Texas baseball team. This athletic department has gotten fat and lazy the last few years. It reminds me of the predicament we're in with Jerry Jones. If revenue is up, why change? I know you're on 247, read Bobby Burton's article on what needs to change. Nowhere does it mention academics. Powers can have his little fight with Perry but Dodds/Plonsky should be focused on resurrecting this athletic department. ESPN didn't give us $300 million to build research labs and move up the academic rankings. :rudy:

It's not about choosing. Its about not giving a damn about sports. Powers could give a shyt, but he doesn't. Hence the athletic directors. Hence the coach. Way more concerned with good guy image and academics. This started before Powers and has been reflected in hires since then.

The fight with Perry isn't little. Its for the future of public higher education in Texas. You basically have an Aggie who thinks that the present is a good as it needs to be vs a Berkeley grad who thinks Texas as a state needs to dump the conservative shyt and go for it.

ESPN gave us $315 million because we have a huge alumni and fan base and constantly pull in good ratings for them. They want a winner and the average fan wants a winner, but they knew the history of UT before Mack Brown and Rick Barnes came in. They are the ones who ignorantly gave UT the money. A&M has an even more average history. They better think long and hard before they jump on that bandwagon. I don't buy the fat and lazy argument based on history. Outside of two coaches, our history is simply average. That's a culture problem. Successful people who are sharks don't get fat and lazy regardless of how much success or how they are treated. You any other program in UT's atmosphere getting fat and lazy? Nope. That's culture. The culture of UT is to either go after the best good ole boy they can so they rich alumni can elbow up and schmooze or they go after mediocre while they look for coach number one. If Rick Barnes wasn't a good alumni fit off the court they would have hired the most mediocre coach they could find. Next generation, who do you think will be the fat cat billionaires running shyt at UT? The Hicks children, the McCombs, the Fords, the Al-Rasheeds, etc. Same families that run shyt now. Who do you think their kids learn from? Will be the same forever at UT until someone like Dell becomes more of a shark with his connections. The next shark UT hires as head football coach will be the first.

UT never has homerun power. Just not how you play in that park. Been that way since the park was built. Texas has always been known for pitching well and playing small ball. That's how they won titles. They haven't hit well for average lately and haven't pitched as well as they have in the past.

UT could never have gotten Luck. If you read what the 247 guys have been saying about his recruitment forever was that he was Stanford before UT even got a look. Why does A&M, a school that is just as big as UT and has the same huge endowment as UT(3rd in the world after Harvard and UT) never get the same criticism. I guess people think of A&M as some tiny little poor school because they never heard much about it.

I think you young cats were just born at the right rare time that UT was actually good at football. Look at the years prior to Mack Brown. Besides the Darrell Royal years, you had a lot of mediocrity. Look at basketball before Rick Barnes. Garbage. Its the culture and who the Texas regents generally want and what they want out of that school. That same element that makes high school ball great in Texas doesn't exist at UT. That same element that makes LSU and Alabama consistent does not exist at UT. These are the same cats that were going to hire Gary Barnett as head coach in 1998. Let that sink in. You think Alabama or Florida cares about any of that Alumni schmoosing. They want to win. UT doesn't care.

Vince young saved him

He shoulda been fired before we won the national championship honestly

:myman: Do you know how many times I told people that Brown and Barnes were saved by the brilliance of two players? Vince Young and TJ Ford

Benching Applewhite for Sims was a dumb decision by Mack. Everybody knew dude wasn't ready, but he forced that shyt, more than likely because of his Dad's influence. People forget, dude was not supposed to go to Texas but switched at the last minute. Now, I'll agree Mack did a great job building up the program, but I think that had to do with the Alumni wanting to become winners. I've seen their recruiting at work...the Texas Angels are the sweetest women I have ever met :ohlawd:

Both coaches are average to below average X and O guys. How many times have we seen the likes of LSU with crap QBs still remain competitive?

Mack needs to stop recruiting wack talent at QB. I remember when we had so many good QBs, they had to transfer. These two fools we have now are garbage :why:

Barnes weakness is that he is a terrible offensive coach and needs an elite PG for us to be effective on that that side of the court. Kopongo playing could have helped but this dude needs TJ Ford type player with a high bball IQ to run shyt.

I say give these guys one more year, if they don't show significant improvement, throw them in the bushes :birdman:
