SAN ANTONIO — A 57-year-old man is dead after beating up his wife, killing his neighbor, lighting a home on fire and starting a shootout with police Tuesday afternoon.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says it started when officers responded to the 200 block of Belden Ave., for a shooting.

When they arrived, McManus says a home was on fire and a suspect began to shoot at them with a rifle, while lying down on the porch of the home on fire.

The SAPD SWAT team arrived on scene and exchanged fire with the suspect.

However, Chief McManus says when the suspect was shot, he did not move.

"We don’t know at this point if he was dead already or not –if he had taken his own life – because there were multiple rounds being fired and, according to reports, he did not move when he was shot," McManus said. "So he may well have been dead already when the shots were fired."

McManus says preliminary reports show the man and his wife had gotten into a physical argument before the shooting.

The woman was able to escape from the home and ran to a neighbor's home, who police say had a history with the suspect. While she ran to the neighbor's home, the suspect began to shoot at her but did not hit her.

Police say the suspect continued to shoot, hitting the neighbor identified as a man in his 60s. Officials later took this man to a nearby alley to treat him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The home continued to burn as the suspect shot at officers. Firefighters could not take down the blaze because they had not received an all-clear.

SAFD Chief Charles Hood said they were eventually given the all-clear.

A vacant lot is in between the destroyed home and the next one. Although the neighboring home did catch fire in the attic, the vacant lot kept the fire from being much worse.

The man's wife was taken to the hospital, police say she had severe facial injuries.
