Considering the lawsuit fallout from her Miseducation album, I wouldn't be surprised that the label people took ownership of "Lauryn Hill" and she had to change up.

The title isn't pretentious. I don't see how it's any different from Ms. Jade aside from Lauryn Hill obviously not debuting with the "Ms. Hill" name and changing it after the fact. The reason why she prefers "Ms. Hill" is because she stated that "Lauryn" gave people too much access as it was her birth name and once she became uber famous, it was weird hearing strangers walk up to her and be like "Lauryn" as if they knew her and wanting hugs. It was a lot that went into it, but she never explained it. People around her did some interview with Rollingstone and talked about how this spiritual advisor named Brother Anthony basically changed how she viewed everything to the point where she was reclusive.
